MIAMI -- Sandy Alcantara's second big league start is being put on hold. On Tuesday night, the organization announced the 22-year-old rookie is going on the 10-day disabled list with a right axillary infection.
The discomfort is in his armpit area, and the team isn't taking any chances of starting him this week. Instead, the organization's top pitching prospect is going on the disabled list, which clears roster space for Jose Urena (right shoulder impingement) to come off the DL and start on Wednesday against the Rays at Marlins Park.
Ranked as Miami's No. 2 prospect by MLB Pipeline, Alcantara made his Marlins debut on June 29, in a game he won, 8-2, against the Mets.
The Marlins were considering starting the rookie either on Wednesday, in the series finale with the Rays, or on Thursday, in the series opener at the Nationals.
Urena, who has been on the DL since June 22, will now rejoin the rotation against Tampa Bay. The club has yet to announce who will face the Nationals on Thursday.
Acquired from the Cardinals in the Marcell Ozuna trade in December, Alcantara opened the season at Triple-A New Orleans. He was called up to face the Mets and worked five innings, allowing one run on three hits. Command was an issue, as he walked five.
Alcantara's fastball velocity was down from when he was with New Orleans. According to Statcast™, his four-seam fastball averaged 94.2 mph, and his max speed was 96.5 mph.
