Angels tab Wooten as assistant hitting coach

November 25th, 2018

Shawn Wooten, a member of the Angels' 2002 World Series championship team, has been promoted to assistant hitting coach, becoming the third confirmed member of manager Brad Ausmus' coaching staff after pitching coach Doug White and hitting coach Jeremy Reed.
Wooten, 46, spent this past season working alongside Reed in the Angels' farm system as an assistant hitting coordinator. He will replace Paul Sorrento, who had served as the club's assistant hitting coach for the previous three seasons under former manager Mike Scioscia.
Wooten, a former catcher and corner infielder, played for the Angels from 2000-03, and he also had stints with the Phillies and Red Sox before retiring in '08. He batted .272 with a .711 OPS and 18 home runs in 267 career Major League games.
