Hayes' slam caps HR parade to lift White Sox

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- ' ninth-inning grand slam capped a six-homer day for the White Sox in a 10-7 Cactus League victory over the Indians on Saturday at Goodyear Ballpark. Four of Chicago's shots came off Tribe righty Josh Tomlin, who was still able to work into the seventh in his continued march toward the regular season.
-- ranked 26th among the White Sox top 30 prospects by MLBPipeline.com -- opened the game with a home run off Tomlin to set the tone. Before the right-hander exited, , and had also taken Tomlin deep. Hayes' game-deciding shot came off righty , who is competing for a spot in the Indians' bullpen.
Over 6 1/3 innings, Tomlin was charged with five runs on nine hits, ending with five strikeouts and no walks on an afternoon that had the wind blowing hard out to right field. Tomlin was in line for the loss until , Cleveland's No. 1 prospect, delivered a game-tying, two-run triple off the wall in right in the seventh.
"He got into the seventh, which was real good," Indians manager Terry Francona said of Tomlin. "When he gets ahead, some balls have caught too much of the plate. And the way the ball is flying now, he's paid for it. But, I'll tell you what, he's situated where I think he feels good. He looks crisp."
Chicago's -- a Rule 5 selection from Oakland -- started and worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings against the Indians. Covey was in a fight for one of the last two relief spots, but with 's biceps tendon soreness in his left shoulder, Covey could be in play for the fifth starter's spot. Covey fanned three and walked one, inducing four outs via the ground ball.
"Obviously besides the two-out walk to my last batter I felt like I pitched really well," Covey said. "I was down in the zone, was mixing up pitches, was pitching ahead in the count most of the time."

Nicky Delmonico added a home run off Indians lefty in the seventh.
The Indians did strike for four runs in the fifth inning, when the White Sox had No. 7-ranked prospect Zack Burdi on the mound. highlighted the outburst with a towering two-run homer to right field and, following Burdi's exit, Tribe slugger added a run-scoring single.
Santana was also involved in a pair of highlight-reel defensive plays at first base for Cleveland. In the first, sent a chopper up the third-base line, where gloved the ball and fired across the diamond from foul territory. Santana was pulled off the bag, but he made the catch and applied a sweeping tag on Anderson for the out. In the fifth, Santana dove to his right to snare a sharp liner off the bat of Anderson to end the inning.
Playing in his fourth Cactus League game, Indians left fielder went 1-for-3 with a ground-rule double and a hit-by-pitch. Brantley is attempting to be ready for Opening Day, following surgery on his right biceps in August.
