KANSAS CITY -- Fully confident in the pitching depth of his ballclub, Red Sox manager Alex Cora made it clear on Friday that the team will take a cautious approach regarding the return of right-hander Steven Wright.
Wright has been on the disabled list with left knee inflammation since June 26 (retroactive to June 23). Asked if he expects Wright to return before the All-Star break, Cora said: "He threw the bullpen on Sunday and he hasn't gotten back to the mound yet. We're running out of time. We've been taking care of these guys the whole time. We're good where we are. There's no need to rush him."
Wright had a PRP injection earlier this week. He was 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA in 40 innings when he went on the DL.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox continue to monitor the progress of second baseman Dustin Pedroia (left knee inflammation) and lefty Thomas Pomeranz (left biceps tendinitis).
Pedroia has returned to Boston after spending some time in New York being evaluated by his knee surgeon. Cora said Pedroia felt the trip was productive.
"He was able to be in front of the doctors and trainers, and they could see first-hand how he was reacting to certain drills," Cora said.
Cora said Pomeranz is scheduled for a Triple-A outing on Saturday.
"The goal is for four innings," Cora said. "We'll go from there."
