Angels recall Ward to bolster infield

June 3rd, 2019

CHICAGO -- The Angels recalled infielder from Triple-A Salt Lake on Monday and inserted him into the lineup for the makeup game against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Ward, who went 1-for-7 (.143) in four games with the Angels earlier in the season, played third base and batted eighth.

“We’re kind of in a position where we need another infielder,” Angels manager Brad Ausmus said. “[Tommy] La Stella, [Luis] Rengifo and [David] Fletcher have been playing every day just because they’re the only infielders. Hopefully, we can get them each a day in the next few.”

Rengifo was out of the lineup on Monday.

The Angels had an open roster spot because left-hander Jose Suarez was optioned to Salt Lake on Sunday after earning his first Major League win against the Mariners.

Worth noting

Instead of getting a day off at home on Monday, the Angels traveled from Seattle to Chicago on Sunday and were scheduled to return to California after the makeup of the April 14 snowout.

“It’s an inconvenience,” Ausmus said. “Truthfully, we got in at a relatively decent hour. We were at the hotel a little after midnight. I think everyone got a good night's sleep. With the 3 o’clock start, we didn’t have to get up too early.

“It’s just a pain having to travel four hours and then four and a half hours back in a 24-hour period, but it’s better than getting in at 6 in the morning.”
