Bohm powers USA past DR, into Super Round

November 5th, 2019

Team USA advanced to the Super Round of the Premier 12 tournament with a 10-8 win over Team Dominican Republic on Monday in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Alec Bohm, the Phillies' top prospect and the No. 34 overall prospect, went 3-for-4 with a double and a three-run homer to lead Team USA to victory in the must-win game. Both teams entered the night 1-1 in group play, meaning the winner would join Team Mexico in advancing out of Group A in the Opening Round.

The Premier 12 tournament is an Olympic qualifier, offering the best team from the Americas and the best team from Asia a spot at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Having advanced out of Group A, Team USA and Team Mexico will join four other teams -- two each from Group B and Group C -- in the Super Round, which is a six-team round robin format, beginning Nov. 11 in Japan.

Along with Bohm's big night out of the No. 7 spot in the order, 10-year Major League veteran Erik Kratz went 3-for-4 with a double and homer of his own out of the No. 8 hole. Kratz, who has played for nine teams (including the Giants and Rays in 2019), also homered in Sunday's loss to Mexico.

Jake Cronenworth, Tampa Bay's No. 17 prospect, chipped in another home run from the No. 6 spot. Team USA's Nos. 6-8 hitters went a combined 7-for-12 with three homers, six RBIs and six runs scored.

Jo Adell, the Angels' top prospect and the No. 5 overall prospect, added a pair of hits and two RBIs. Boston's No. 2 prospect, Bobby Dalbec, also pitched in with an RBI single.

Right-handers Wyatt Mills, Seattle's No. 20 prospect, and Noah Song, Boston's No. 15 prospect, helped halt the Dominican Republic's rally with three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. After the Dominican Republic's four-run fifth inning cut Team USA's lead to 9-7, Mills turned in two perfect innings with a pair of strikeouts and Song followed by striking out three in a scoreless eighth.
