Hernandez recalled; Davis optioned to Triple-A

TORONTO -- Ahead of Wednesday’s 11-7 win over the Yankees, the Blue Jays announced that they had optioned Jonathan Davis to Triple-A Buffalo and recalled Teoscar Hernandez.

Hernandez had been optioned to the Bisons on May 16, after hitting .189/.262/.299 over 39 games in the Majors to start the season, with three home runs, three doubles, one triple and 15 RBIs. In 19 games at Triple-A, the 26-year-old outfielder slashed .253/.313/.480 with five home runs, one triple, 11 runs scored and 11 driven in.

“He’s just refreshed,” Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo said. “It was good for him to go down there, talking to him, and he feels like, ‘OK, here we go, I’m ready to go.’”

Hernandez went 2-for-5 with a two-run double in his first game back.

“He was really good today,” Montoyo said. “His approach was really good. All the guys in the clubhouse like him so much. Everybody was pulling for him and everybody was so happy with the base hits that he got today that it was awesome to watch for me.”

Davis got into 17 games with the Blue Jays, and the 27-year-old center fielder went 7-for-49 with one home run, two RBIs, three runs scored and one stolen base over that span.

“Teoscar has done it before in the big leagues, so we are giving Teoscar another chance,” Montoyo said before the game. “You have to get a chance here to see what you can do, because the gap between Triple-A and the big leagues is so big now that you can be doing good there, and you do have to come here to see where you are.

“Same thing happened with Jonathan Davis, and when we talked to him today, he even said it, ‘It’s a big gap, so I need to work. I’m glad I got called up, I had a chance to play, now I know what I need to work on.’ That’s what he said when he left, and the same thing goes for every player who comes up.”

Hernandez got the start in center field, which is where the Blue Jays hope he will remain for the foreseeable future.

“We want him to play center a lot,” Montoyo said. “He’s played center before and did well, and we want to see him again there. And [Lourdes] Gurriel Jr. is playing left pretty well, so we want to leave Gurriel there and not move him around.”

Though Hernandez has gotten action in center field in only 18 Major League games, he has played the position throughout his career in the Minors. After getting in some additional time in center with the Bisons, the Blue Jays are confident in his ability to take it over at Rogers Centre.

“We wanted him to go back and get more accustomed to center field,” Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said. “And the offensive performance we thought would benefit from a bit of a reset. ... [In center], he had a ton of reps there as a Minor League player, projects there, all of the objective information’s very good there.

“Subjectively, we’ve seen the ability for him to do that. Getting comfortable again there, that’s why we sent him down to Triple-A, to do it on a more regular basis, and I would expect the run tool to play there. He’s as fast as Mookie Betts and has the ability to do it. It’s the assertiveness and aggressiveness that is where the development opportunity is.”
