KANSAS CITY -- The Royals weren't kidding when they said they wanted to return to their identity of speed and athleticism.
On Tuesday, about a week after signing Billy Hamilton, the Royals brought back speedy outfielder Terrance Gore on a one-year deal. A source told MLB.com that the deal is a split contract: $650,000 on the Major League side and $350,000 on the Minor League side, with $100,000 worth of performance bonuses.
To make room for Gore on the 40-man roster, the Royals designated Rosell Herrera for assignment.
"As I have stated several times, we need to get more action-type players to our team and our offense," Royals general manager Dayton Moore told MLB.com. "We need the type of speed that is hard to defend. Adding someone like Terrance Gore gives [manager Ned Yost] a terrific option late in games.
"We need to be a team that is exceptional in areas, and the areas that we can do that in right now are defense and the speed element."

Gore, a fan favorite, was dealt to the Cubs in August after spending almost eight years in the Royals' organization. Kansas City selected him in the 20th round of the 2011 Draft.
The 27-year-old Gore is famously known for his basestealing aptitude. He has just one big league hit in parts of five seasons -- that came in 2018 with the Cubs.
But Gore is 27-for-31 on stolen-base attempts in the regular season. He also is 5-for-6 in steals in the postseason, four of those coming with the Royals from 2014-15.
