Blue Jays shuffle deck after Thornton injury

Pannone DFA'd to make room for Bergen on roster; Vogelbach undergoing intake process

August 24th, 2020

The Blue Jays have placed right-hander on the 10-day injured list with right elbow inflammation and selected the contract of left-hander , who was on their taxi squad. To make room for Bergen on the 40-man roster, left-hander has been designated for assignment.

Thornton was on the mound Sunday and managed to pitch one inning, but then he took himself out of the game after feeling discomfort in the elbow. It marks the second time he has had problems with it; there were issues last year, but they weren't considered serious. The plan is for Thornton to get a second opinion, according to manager Charlie Montoyo.

The Blue Jays must figure out who will replace Thornton in the rotation on Friday. In the meantime, Bergen will work out in the bullpen. He has big league experience, having pitched for the Giants last year. He was San Francisco’s Rule 5 Draft pick last year and allowed 12 runs in 19 2/3 innings, and he was originally selected by Toronto in the 2015 Draft.

As for Pannone, he didn’t play a game for the Blue Jays this season, but he went 7-7 with a 5.43 ERA in 49 games across two seasons with Toronto.

When a player's contract is designated for assignment -- often abbreviated "DFA" -- that player is immediately removed from his club's Major League roster. Within seven days of the transaction, the player must either be traded, released or placed on irrevocable outright waivers.

Vogelbach going through intake process
First baseman/designated hitter , who was acquired from the Mariners in a trade for cash considerations on Sunday, must deal with the intake process before joining the Blue Jays as part of the COVID-19 protocols. The results could take a few days, according to Montoyo.

According to Montoyo, having Vogelbach does not affect Rowdy Tellez, who is also a DH/first baseman. The skipper feels that both players can be in the lineup.

“We are just looking for another bat to impact the lineup. It has nothing to do with Rowdy. It’s about bringing another bat to the lineup,” Montoyo said.
