DETROIT -- Victor Martinez was released from a local hospital Saturday morning after spending two nights under observation for an irregular heartbeat.
Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said he traded text messages with his veteran hitter Saturday morning as he was leaving the hospital. Martinez told him he was feeling much better than when he was admitted Thursday night after leaving the Tigers' win over the Rays with an accelerated heartbeat and cold sweats.
Martinez will remain in the Detroit area as the Tigers travel to the West Coast next week. He'll be monitored for the next 7-10 days, according to Ausmus.
"The thought process is probably a week of rest," Ausmus said.
Martinez went on the 10-day disabled list Friday. He won't be eligible to return until the start of the Tigers' next homestand June 27. Whether he's cleared to return at that point remains to be seen.
Martinez's health was on the Tigers' minds as they continued without him Friday night. Jose Cabrera said Friday that Martinez's situation was scary stuff. Daniel Norris said he realized something wasn't right when he saw Martinez back in the clubhouse between at-bats Thursday, even before he left the game.
"Obviously my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family," Norris said. "Once something like that happens, you obviously want him back, but we have to play hard without him."
