Target these pitchers in daily fantasy Friday

May 7th, 2021

Friday's full schedule presents a fascinating pitching landscape for daily fantasy players.

While there isn't one clear-cut top pitching option, there are a handful of ace-caliber arms on the mound. From established starters like Jack Flaherty and Blake Snell to budding stars like Trevor Rogers and Julio Urías to a guy who threw a no-hitter and had a sub-1.00 April ERA in Carlos Rodón, there are plenty of quality starters in action on Friday.

We'll break down the top five options below -- and even a few other pitchers worth taking a longer look at:

Jack Flaherty, RHP

The stat(s): 2.10 ERA in last five starts

The matchup: After his disappointing 2020 campaign, Flaherty was tagged for six runs off six hits (including two homers) over just 4 1/3 innings on Opening Day. He's seemingly regained his ace form ever since, going 5-0 with a 2.10 ERA and allowing only one home run over 30 innings in his last five outings. The key here is that he'll be facing the Rockies in the comforts of Busch Stadium, as opposed to the hitter-friendly Coors Field. The Rockies are averaging just 3.4 runs per game (26th in MLB) and slugging .336 (27th) on the road this season, compared to scoring 5.9 runs per game (third) and slugging .471 (fourth) at home.

Carlos Rodón, LHP

The stat(s): 0.72 ERA, 36 K's in 25 innings

The matchup: We all know Rodón was absolutely dominant in his April 14 no-hitter against Cleveland, but he's been nearly just as impressive in each of his other three starts. He hasn't given up more than three hits in any outing this season -- and his seven strikeouts in that no-hitter were actually a season low, despite him pitching a full nine innings. He's coming off a 12-strikeout gem in just six innings of work against the Tigers. That said, Detroit has the highest strikeout rate in the Majors, while he'll be facing a Kansas City team in this outing that has the fourth-lowest K% rate. In fact, it's worth noting that Rodón's four starts have come against the three teams -- the Mariners, Indians (twice) and Tigers -- that rank 28th, 29th and 30th in team batting average. This won't be an ideal matchup, but Rodón is about as locked in as it gets right now.

Trevor Rogers, LHP

The stat(s): 33.8 K%, .195 opponents' BA

The matchup: Rogers finally came back down to earth a bit in his last outing, giving up a season-high three earned runs over five innings against the Nationals. That came after he earned NL Rookie of the Month honors for an April in which he finished with a 1.29 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 28 innings, while outdueling both Jacob deGrom and Corbin Burnes. Still, the 23-year-old southpaw is averaging 12.0 strikeouts per nine innings and he gets a favorable matchup against a Brewers team that is without Christian Yelich. Milwaukee has the fourth-highest strikeout rate (27.2%) in the Majors and ranks 26th in team batting average.

Blake Snell, LHP

The stat(s): 52.3% whiff rate with breaking ball since 2020 (third in MLB)

The matchup: Snell's upside has been a bit limited this season, with the southpaw yet to pitch more than 5 1/3 innings in any of his six outings. He's issued multiple walks each time out, leading to some early hooks due to his high pitch count. He still has one of the nastiest breaking balls in the game, with opponents going just 5-for-60 (.083) with a 51.2% whiff rate against his slider and 9-for-51 (.176) with a 54.1% whiff rate vs. his curveball since the start of last season. Snell is facing a Giants team in this matchup that ranks 25th in batting average and 26th in slugging percentage against breaking balls this season. The concern for Snell, however, is that while he'll be trying to keep his pitch count down, San Francisco is one of the most patient teams in the league, drawing 4.1 pitches per plate appearance (second-most in MLB).

Julio Urías, LHP

The stat(s): 3-0, 0.86 ERA on road

The matchup: Urías has been fantastic for the Dodgers this season, especially away from home. The 24-year-old lefty has completed seven innings in each of his three road outings, allowing just two runs and striking out 27 over 21 innings. He'll look to continue that trend on Friday at Angel Stadium, where he'll face an Angels offense that has been scuffling a bit of late -- and just placed Anthony Rendon on the injured list. The Angels are averaging just 3.6 runs per game over their last 14 games, and that includes a 10-run outburst Saturday against Seattle in which Rendon went 3-for-5 and drove in four of those runs. The Halos are just 4-10 during this recent stretch, and they've averaged just 2.4 runs per game in those 10 losses.

Worth a look

Anthony DeSclafani (vs. Padres): DeSclafani has been great for the Giants this season, posting a 2.00 ERA through six starts. The concern here is that he'll be facing the Padres for a second straight start -- and the third time this season. He allowed three runs over six innings vs. San Diego on Saturday, but tallied a season-low three strikeouts.

Zach Eflin (vs. Braves): Eflin has pitched at least six innings in each of his six starts this season, including twice against this Atlanta team (April 4 and April 10). The results, though, have been -- quite literally -- hit or miss. He's allowed 19 hits over 12 2/3 innings in his last two outings, though he's also tallied 15 K's in that span. Eflin has at least six strikeouts in four of his six starts, but has just five in his other two outings combined.

Eduardo Rodriguez (vs. Orioles): Rodriguez has 31 strikeouts to just three walks over 28 innings this season, and he's managed a 4-0 record through five starts despite a 4.18 ERA. It's a solid matchup here, though, as the left-hander faces an Orioles team that ranks 25th in runs per game and 28th in on-base percentage.
