Monday's top prospect performers

July 30th, 2019

Here's a look at Monday's top Minor League performers from each team's Top 30 Prospects list:

AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST

Blue Jays: Gabriel Moreno, C (No. 9) -- 2-for-5, 2 R, 3B, 2 RBI (Class A Lansing)
For a catcher with below-average speed, Moreno hits his share of triples. He notched his fourth of the season Monday as part of a two-hit, two-run, two-RBI showing in the Lugnuts' loss against South Bend. The multihit effort was the 11th in 22 games this month for the 19-year-old backstop, who's batting .308/.359/.525 with 23 extra-base hits including eight homers through 53 games in his first full season. That hitting ability and right-handed power has Moreno's stock on the rise, and he's also fared well defensively, throwing out 32.6 percent of attempted basestealers in 36 games behind the plate. Orioles: Ryan Mountcastle, 1B (No. 4, MLB No. 70) -- 3-for-5, RBI (Triple-A Norfolk)
Mountcastle has now hit safely in 13 straight games for the Tides after notching a trio of singles. The 22-year-old is batting a robust .446 (25-for-56) during that stretch, with three homers, eight doubles and 13 RBIs, and it's helped to boost his season average from .297 to .318, the best mark of his career. Altogether, Mountcastle has done his part to be considered for a September callup, producing an .864 OPS with 19 homers, 26 doubles and 64 RBIs in 96 games in his first Triple-A campaign. Orioles prospects stats »

Rays: Seth Johnson, RHP (No. 16) -- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K (GCL Rays)
It's hard to start a career better than Johnson has, as Monday's scoreless outing was his fifth straight to begin his career. He's allowed seven hits over 10 innings across those outings, striking out seven and walking two. Selected by the Rays with the No. 40 overall pick in this year's Draft out of Campbell, Johnson, a 20-year-old right-hander, is still relatively new to pitching after spending his first two college seasons as a light-hitting shortstop at Louisburg (N.C.) JC. His stuff, however, is very promising, as he'll sit 91-95 mph and touch 98 with his fastball while flashing an above-average slider and solid changeup. Rays prospects stats »

Red Sox: Matthew Lugo, SS (No. 14) -- 3-for-5, 2 R, 2 RBI (GCL Red Sox)
Lugo, Boston's second-round pick in this year's Draft, extended his hitting streak to five games with his second three-hit performance in 19 pro games. The Puerto Rico product has opened his career on a high note, hitting .284/.346/.419 with six extra-base hits in the Gulf Coast League, all while impressing with his glove at shortstop. The No. 69 overall Draft pick signed for above-slot value at $1.1 million. Red Sox prospects stats »

Yankees: Canaan Smith, OF (No. 26) -- 2-for-5, R, RBI (Class A Charleston)
Smith, 20, has been one of the South Atlantic League's hottest hitters in July, batting .380/.510/.456 over 25 games. The 2017 fourth-round pick has been especially hot of late, batting .441 with 10 runs, 12 RBIs and more walks (nine) than strikeouts (six) over his past 10 games for the RiverDogs. To go along with a .313 average in his first full season, the 6-foot, 215-pound outfielder has reached base at a .413 clip while delivering 33 extra-base hits (seven homers) and swiping nine bags in 95 games. Yankees prospects stats »

AMERICAN LEAGUE CENTRAL

Indians: Bobby Bradley, 1B (No. 6) -- 2-for-5, 2 HR (Triple-A Columbus)
Bradley's multi-homer game was the 14th of his career, and he's now accomplished the feat six times this season in 76 games at the Triple-A level, tied for most in the minors this year. He's hit 27 dingers for the Clippers, good for third place in the International League, and 28 overall including his time in the big leagues with the Indians. While six of his eight hits over 15 games in the Majors went for extra bases, Bradley batted just .178 with 20 strikeouts in 45 at-bats. Indians prospects stats »

Royals: Daniel Lynch, LHP (No. 3, No. 76 in MLB) -- 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K (AZL Royals)
Lynch continued to assuage concerns about his balky left elbow on Monday with an unhittable rehab outing in the Arizona League. The 22-year-old southpaw recorded half of his outs via the strikeout, faced one over the minimum and threw 23 of 31 pitches for strikes in the outing. Lynch, whom the Royals selected with the No. 34 overall pick in the 2018 Draft, has now made three rehab starts in the AZL, allowing just one run on six hits while fanning 12 in nine innings. Prior to the injury, he'd compiled a 3.09 ERA with 52 strikeouts over 55 1/3 innings at Class A Advanced Lynchburg to open his first full season. Royals prospects stats »

Tigers: Matt Manning, RHP (No. 2, No. 29 in MLB) -- 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K (Double-A Erie); Jose Azocar, OF (No. 30) -- 2-for-5, 2 HR, 4 RBI (Double-A Erie)
Manning went through a brief rough patch in June, posting a 3.71 ERA with a 1.46 WHIP and 4.7 BB/9 in five starts, and then had a scheduled two-week break following his appearance in the Futures Game. But the 21-year-old right-hander has been better since he returned to action and was especially good Monday, tossing seven innings of three-hit ball in Erie's win over Trenton. While he only struck out three batters, Manning issued only one walk and recorded 11 groundouts in the outing, while throwing 57 of 85 pitches for strikes. It marked the first time that the former first-round pick (2016) had completed seven innings in a start since May 5. Azocar backed Manning's effort with the first two-homer game of his career, as he hit a solo shot in the first inning before connecting on a three-run homer in the eighth. The 23-year-old outfielder isn't known for his power, and hit all of six home runs across his first six pro seasons (542 games), but has shown more pop this season in his first Double-A campaign, hitting eight homers while slashing .294/.332/.411 in 98 games for the SeaWolves. Tigers prospects stats »

Twins: Nick Gordon, 2B (No. 14) -- 2-for-4, 2 2B, RBI (Triple-A Rochester)
After hitting a pair of two-baggers on Monday, Gordon now owns a share of fourth place in the International League with 27 doubles on the season. The 23-year-old former first-round pick (2014) is having a strong campaign in his return to the Triple-A level, slashing .296/.339/.458 with 34 extra-base hits through 66 games. Twins prospects stats »

White Sox: Luis Gonzalez, OF (No. 13) -- 2-for-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI (Double-A Birmingham)
Gonzalez went deep for the first time since June 27, as his two-run shot in the ninth provided the Barons with a pair of insurance runs in a 6-2 win over Montgomery. The 2017 third-rounder out of New Mexico had a breakout campaign in 2018, when he produced a .307/.368/.498 line with 14 homers, 40 doubles and 71 RBIs in 117 games between Class A Kannapolis and Class A Advanced Winston-Salem. This year, in his first Double-A campaign, the 23-year-old outfielder has taken a step back offensively, slashing .240/.298/.346 with six homers, 13 doubles and 45 RBIs through 98 games. White Sox prospects stats »

AMERICAN LEAGUE WEST

A’s: Grant Holmes, RHP (No. 15) -- 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 5 K (Double-A Midland)
Holmes recorded his third-straight five-inning start, but he ultimately took the loss as Midland fell to Tulsa, 8-2. Three of the five hits allowed by the 23-year-old right-hander were solo home runs, and he's now given up seven dingers in 59 2/3 innings this season in the Texas League. That being said, the fact that Holmes has stayed healthy this season is a very good sign after a shoulder injury limited him to just six innings and two starts in 2018. Overall, the former first-round pick (2014, Dodgers) has performed well, posting a 3.32 ERA with 52 strikeouts over 17 appearances (11 starts). A's prospects stats »

Angels: Brandon Marsh, OF (No. 2) -- 2-for-5, HR, RBI (Double-A Mobile)
Marsh missed nearly the entire month of June while on the injured list, but he's been working his way back to form recently. The 2016 second-round Draft pick has hits in four straight contests, including two multihit performances. One of those came Monday, when the 21-year-old launched his third homer of the year and singled in Mobile's 8-5 loss to Mississippi. The .697 OPS mark on the year is the lowest of the Georgia prep product's career so far, but a strong and healthy finish to the season should set him up for a promotion next season. Angels prospects stats »

Astros: Abraham Toro, 3B (No. 9) -- 3-for-5, 2 HR, 2B, 2 R, 4 RBI (Double-A Corpus Christi)
Toro had a career night at the plate, and he delivered at the biggest moment in the Hooks' 7-6, 10th-inning victory over Springfield. The 22-year-old third baseman notched his first multihomer game in more than two years with blasts in the fourth and sixth innings; the second came as part of a stretch of back-to-back-to-back home runs for Corpus Christi and marked his 16th of the year. Then, in the 10th inning, Toro provided the knockout punch with a game-winning RBI double, his fourth run batted in on the night. The 10 total bases he racked up are the most of his professional career, and his slugging percentage jumped up by twenty points to .509 by day's end. Astros prospects stats »

Mariners: Julio Rodriguez, OF (No. 2, MLB No. 54) -- 1-for-4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI (Class A West Virginia)
Make that two straight games with a home run for Rodriguez, who hit a third-inning, two-run blast to power West Virginia to a 4-3 win over Rome. After a 1-for-22 skid at the plate, the 18-year-old outfield prospect has four hits in his past three games, including three extra-base knocks. The 6-foot-3 product of the Dominican Republic has flashed his 55-grade power tool recently, with five of his eight homers this season coming this month. He's also knocked in 25 runs in that time (26 games). Mariners prospects stats »

Rangers: Leody Taveras, OF (No. 5) -- 1-for-3, HR, RBI (Double-A Frisco)
Taveras, a defense-first outfield prospect, showed some of the pop he can flash with his third homer of the year in Frisco's 5-4 win over the Travelers. It was the first dinger with the RoughRiders for Taveras, whom the Rangers signed in 2015 out of the Dominican Republic. The 20-year old speedster also showed his improved plate discipline, drawing his seventh walk in the past 11 games. Rangers prospects stats »

NATIONAL LEAGUE EAST

Braves: Huascar Ynoa, RHP (No. 12) -- 6 2/3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 11 K (Triple-A Gwinnett)
Ynoa ended with two runs on his line and a loss, but he entered the seventh without allowing a hit. That was mostly due to nine of his eye-popping 11 strikeouts on the night, which tied his career high set last season. Through six innings, the Dominican Republic native had issued just a second-inning walk before the Bulls struck for consecutive two-out singles. The 21-year-old hurler, who regularly sits 93-95 mph with his fastball, has seemed to turn a corner after mixed results earlier in the season. He's allowed just one run with 18 strikeouts over his past three starts for the Stripers (18 2/3 IP). Braves prospects stats »

Marlins: Sixto Sanchez, RHP (No. 1, MLB No. 26) -- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K (Double-A Jacksonville)
Sanchez, who earned a win Monday on his 21st birthday, has made Double-A look pretty easy this year. Outside of a short outing to begin July, the Marlins' top prospect hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in a start -- and he hasn't allowed any runs in his past two. The flame-throwing prospect, whom the Phillies signed for just $35,000 out of the Dominican Republic in 2015, has struck out 14 and allowed just four hits across those 13 innings, lowering his ERA to 3.20 and his WHIP to 1.06 with the Jumbo Shrimp. Marlins prospects stats »

Mets: Freddy Valdez, OF (No. 18) -- 1-for-3 (DSL Mets)
Valdez, a 17-year-old whom the Mets signed out of the Dominican Republic last year, extended his hitting streak to five games and is now hitting .278 in his profressional debut. Valdez is very aggressive at the plate and has some swing-and-miss tendencies, but also has impressive raw power. The outfielder grades out as an average runner and the Mets believe he'll be able to remain in center field. Mets prospects stats »

Phillies: Luis Garcia, 2B (No. 6) -- 2-for-5 (Class A Lakewood)
Garcia notched his third multihit game of the month with two singles in the Blueclaws' 7-6, extra-innings win over Greenville. The 18-year-old glove-first shortstop has four hits in his past three games. Phillies prospects stats »

Nationals: Matt Cronin, LHP (No. 11) -- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K (Class A Hagerstown)
When the Nats selected Cronin in the fourth round of this year's Draft out of Arkansas, they knew they were getting a reliever with a plus curveball who could take an accelerated path to the Major Leagues. The early results suggest that the club was dead-on with their assessment, as the 21-year-old southpaw has been dominant to start his career, racking up 16 strikeouts in eight innings while pitching to a 1.13 ERA for Hagerstown. Nationals prospects stats »

NATIONAL LEAGUE CENTRAL

Brewers: Pablo Abreu, OF (No. 19) -- 2-for-6, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI (AZL Brewers)
After missing nearly two months while on the injured list, Abreu is building his strength back up, and he took another step in Monday's 13-11 loss to the AZL Padres. Batting in the DH spot, the 19-year-old rocketed his first home run of the year -- he's played only 13 games -- and slashed an RBI single to rack up a season-high three RBIs. The outfield prospect has batted 5-for-23 with a double, triple and homer in his rehab assignment as he tries to work back to Class A Wisconsin, with whom he began the year. Brewers prospects stats »

Cubs: Cole Roederer, OF (No. 6) -- 1-for-2, 4 R, HR, 3 RBI, 3 BB, SB (Class A South Bend)
South Bend put up 17 runs in its rout of Lansing on Monday, four of which belonged to Roederer, the No. 77 overall pick from the 2018 Draft. The 19-year-old connected on his sixth home run in the ninth inning to tie a bow on a performance that included three walks and a stolen base, his 11th of the year. Though he's had a tough first season, producing a .216/.312/.360 batting line in 79 games, the young outfielder has one of the higher offensive ceilings in the Cubs' system. Cubs prospects stats »

Cardinals: Dylan Carlson, OF (No. 2, MLB No. 52) -- 1-for-5, HR, 2 RBI (Double-A Springfield)
Carlson launched a towering two-run bomb to right field in the fifth inning of Springfield's extra-innings loss to the Hooks, marking his Texas League-leading 18th homer of the year. The 20-year-old has had a phenomenal month at the plate, slashing .311/.388/.622 with seven doubles and seven home runs. His raw power helped earn the California prep product a Futures Game selection earlier this year. Cardinals prospects stats »

Pirates: Will Craig, 1B (No. 10) -- 2-for-3, R, 2B (Triple-A Indianapolis)
Craig was an offensive force during the first two months of the season, batting a combined .274 with 15 homers in 51 games. Since then, however, the 24-year-old has hit just .224 with four homers in 48 contests, taking his season average from .280 down to .249. Despite his recent struggles, Craig's 2019 batting average is on par with his 2018 clip (.248), and he's currently one home run shy of matching his career-high total (also from last season). Pirates prospects stats »

Reds: Packy Naughton, LHP (No. 14) -- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K (Double-A Chattanooga)
Naughton has now allowed one earned run or fewer in five of his past six starts for the Lookouts, a stretch during which he's dropped his Double-A ERA from 3.72 to 2.99. A 23-year-old southpaw capable of locating three average-or-better pitches, Naughton has emerged as a breakout prospect in Cincinnati's system this year, posting 123 2/3 innings of 2.84-ERA ball across two levels, with 97 strikeouts and 28 walks. He's averaged better than 5 2/3 innings while making 22 starts. Reds prospects stats »

NATIONAL LEAGUE WEST

D-backs: Alek Thomas, OF (No. 2, No. 63) -- 3-for-4, R (Class A Kane County)
Thomas had been scuffling entering Monday, batting just .140 with one extra-base hit and a 25-percent strikeout rate across his last nine games. But he got back on track with a three-hit showing, and it helped the Cougars edge Wisconsin, 4-2, in Midwest League action. A 2018 second-round pick by the D-backs out of the Chicago prep ranks, Thomas represented the organization in this year's SiriusXM Future Game -- one of many highlights this season in a breakout campaign for the 19-year-old outfielder. Thomas ranks among the circuit leaders with a .301 average (tied-fourth), an .854 OPS (second), 102 hits (third), 59 runs (third), 159 total bases (second). D-backs prospects stats »

Dodgers: Josiah Gray, RHP (No. 5) -- 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K (Double-A Tulsa)
That's back-to-back starts without an earned run for Gray, who threw 54 of his 82 pitches for strikes and has a 1.56 ERA through 17 1/3 innings (three starts for Tulsa). The 21-year-old, whom the Dodgers acquired in the offseason Yasiel Puig trade, began the year with Class A Great Lake, where he went 1-0 over five starts, before moving up to Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga, where he went 7-0 over 12 starts. Gray has a solid fastball-slider combo and has used it to amass 119 strikeouts through 108 innings this season. Dodgers prospects stats »

Giants: Seth Corry, LHP (No. 8) -- 5 2/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 K (Class A Augusta)
Corry allowed a walk in the first inning of his outing vs. Lexington. Then, he retired 16 batters in a row to keep a no-hit bid intact for the GreenJackets' staff, which lost it with a single in the eighth inning. The 20-year-old lefty has diced up his competition in the South Atlantic League, allowing one earned run or fewer in 14 of his 21 starts to help set a league-best 1.85 ERA mark. The Utah prep product has been even better than that in his past three starts, allowing no runs on three hits with 25 strikeouts -- part of his league-leading 129-K total. Giants prospects stats »

Padres: Joey Cantillo, LHP (No. 19) -- 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 6 K (Class A Fort Wayne)
Cantillo's strong season continued with another quality start for Fort Wayne. The 19-year-old, a 16th-round pick from the 2017 Draft, has pitched to a 2.05 ERA through 18 starts this season and has struck out 121 over 92 innings. Cantillo threw 54 of his 81 pitches for strikes in Monday's win over Dayton and has yielded one earned run or fewer in 12 of his 18 starts this season. Padres prospects stats »

Rockies: Aaron Schunk, 3B (No. 12) -- 2-for-4, 2 HR, 3 RBI (Class A Short-Season Boise); Michael Toglia, 1B (No. 5) -- 1-for-4, HR
The Rockies' top two picks in this year's Draft carried Boise to an 11-9 win on Monday. Schunk, Colorado's second-rounder, extended his hitting streak to five with his fourth straight multihit performance. The Georgia product got the scoring started with a solo blast in the first and then added a two-run shot, his sixth of the year, in the sixth, for the first two-homer game of his young career. The 22-year-old shows raw pop in batting practice, but he's more of a line-drive hitter. Toglia, the Rockies' first-rounder out of UCLA, clubbed his seventh homer of the year, which is the third-most of any player taken in this year's Draft. The 6-foot-5 first baseman has huge raw power from both sides of the plate, though there are some questions about his ability to make enough contact to tap into it consistently. Rockies prospects stats »
