Gonzales, Larnach tee off at camp

March 25th, 2021

A big league camp homer is a special thing for a prospect, especially when it's their first.

Baseball's No. 43 overall prospect Nick Gonzales drilled his career Grapefruit League blast for the Pirates while No. 80 overall prospect Trevor Larnach went yard for the second straight game with the Twins on Wednesday.

Gonzales, who was selected seventh overall in last June's Draft, led off the eighth with a pinch-hit drive to left-center. The 21-year-old now has three hits in his last six at-bats after starting his pro debut 0-for-6.

Coming out of New Mexico State, Gonzales quickly impressed at the Pirates' alternate training site last summer. The Arizona native was drafted as a shortstop, but has played exclusively at second since joining the farm system.

After clearing the fences in his sole at-bat on Sunday, Larnach touched 'em all in his only trip to the plate on Wednesday. The Twins' No. 3 prospect pinch-ran for Byron Buxton the sixth and came around to score, then drilled a solo shot to center in the eighth. Larnach now has six career homers in three Grapefruit League campaigns.

Larnach was called up for the day after being optioned to the alternate training site on Tuesday. In five spring games, the outfielder is 3-for-9 with one strikeout.

Other notable top prospect performances from Wednesday:

Ke'Bryan Hayes, 3B, PIT (MLB No. 9)
Hayes continues to fuel the fire of his Rookie of the Year hype. The Pirates' top prospect ripped a 107.5 mph single to right, then showed off his speed to beat out an infield single to third. Both knocks came off fellow Top 100 prospect Ian Anderson (more on his start later). With hits in all but one game, Hayes is hitting .450/.488/.775 with four strikeouts in 13 games this spring. Ian Anderson, RHP, ATL (MLB No. 18)
The most notable part of Anderson's line is that he went six innings for the first time this spring. Getting stretched came with some hiccups though as the 6-foot-3 hurler allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk. And despite it being his longest start, Anderson registered his lowest strikeout total of Grapefruit League play (one). The right-hander got just two swings and misses on his fastball, while his changeup missed more bats. Gameday »

Joey Bart, C, SF (MLB No. 23)
Bart has already been optioned to the Minors and won't make the Opening Day roster, but he's still capitalizing on the opportunity to play in Cactus League games. The 24-year-old catcher hit his second homer of Spring Training in his lone at-bat during the Giants' win over the Padres. Bart, who is hitting .455 in Spring Training, hit .233 over 33 games during his Major League debut last season. Gameday »

Daniel Lynch, LHP, KC (MLB No. 29)
Making his second start and fourth appearance of the spring, Lynch held the Angels to a run on a three hits over two innings, striking out one. The 24-year-old southpaw showed poise in stranding Mike Trout on second after a first-inning double. Justin Upton lined a ball off him for a leadoff single in the second, but after a brief delay, Lynch kept working, getting the third out of the inning on the ground after Upton scored on a Kurt Suzuki single. The No. 34 overall pick of the 2018 Draft touched 99 mph at the Royals' alternate site last year. Gameday »

Simeon Woods Richardson, RHP, TOR (MLB No. 87)
Woods Richardson held his own against the Bronx Bombers, working around two hits and a walk for three scoreless frames. The 20-year-old hurler struck out a spring-high four to keep his ERA spotless in three outings. Woods Richardson showcased his full arsenal with the strikeouts coming on his slider, changeup and curve. Gameday »

Brice Turang, SS, MIL (MLB No. 96)
Entering as a pinch-runner for Luis Urías in the fifth inning, Turang promptly recorded his second steal of camp, then singled twice over two trips to the dish. The 2018 first-rounder started the day with three hits over 25 at-bats this spring. Turang turned heads with his advanced hitting at the Brewers' alternate site last year. Gameday »

Taylor Trammell, OF, SEA (MLB No. 100)
Trammell hammered a 1-1 pitch from the Cubs' Zach Davies onto the right-field berm to put the Mariners on the board in the second. Trammell, who finished 1-for-2 and added an assist from the outfield, swatted 10 homers, four triples and 12 doubles over 126 Minor League games in 2019. Gameday »

Dean Kremer, RHP, BAL
Kremer, the Orioles' No. 8 prospect, yielded two runs, but struck out five over 4 2/3 innings against the Red Sox. The right-hander bounced back from a tough outing as he gave up five runs in his prior outing. Kremer made his Major League debut during the 2020 season and pitched to a 4.82 ERA four starts (18 2/3 innings). Gameday »

Nick Allen, SS, OAK
Allen is primarily known for his glove and is often considered one of the best defenders in the Minors. However, the A's No. 3 prospect has made some noise with his bat lately as well. Allen, who finished 1-for-2 against the White Sox, drove in a pair of runs with a bases-loaded double in the ninth inning and has three hits over his past eight at-bats. Gameday »

Ryan Jeffers, C, MIN
Jeffers drilled his first career big league camp homer, a two-out, two-run shot to left-center. With a single to left his next time up, Jeffers is 4-for-10 with three RBIs over his last three games as he shakes off a minor slump. After playing 26 games with Minnesota last season, the 23-year-old is poised to be the club's backup catcher come Opening Day. Gameday »

Luis Garcia, RHP, HOU
Garcia struck out three on nine pitches upon entering the game against the Nationals in the fifth, then faced the minimum in the sixth by inducing a double-play ball off the bat of Juan Soto to erase his inning-opening walk to Trea Turner. In just his second game this spring, he totaled five punchouts over four scoreless innings, working around two hits and two walks. The 24-year-old righty pitched in five games -- starting one -- for the Astros last year. Gameday »

JoJo Romero, LHP, PHI
Romero's stingy spring continued as he lowered his ERA to 1.17. The 5-foot-11 southpaw worked around two hits with a pair of strikeouts over 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief against the Tigers. Romero has allowed one run with eight punchouts in 7 2/3 innings across seven Grapefruit League appearances. He is likely slated for the Phillies' bullpen come Opening Day, but there's a chance he starts the year at the club's alternate training site. Gameday »
