These are the top prospects who have been dealt

July 31st, 2019

It's that time of year: when many players -- prospects included -- find themselves switching teams prior to the July 31 Trade Deadline. Teams in the hunt are looking to make a big splash by acquiring players who will help them play deep into October, while other teams are looking to stockpile talent with an eye toward 2020 and beyond.

Below are all the prospects on team Top 30 lists who have changed addresses in the weeks leading up to the Deadline.

July 30
Reds trade OF Taylor Trammell (No. 1, No. 30 on Top 100) to Padres, LHP Scott Moss (No. 12) and OF Yasiel Puig to Indians
Padres trade LHP Logan Allen (No. 7, No. 98 on Top 100), OF Franmil Reyes, INF Victor Nova to Indians
Indians trade RHP Trevor Bauer to Reds
Reds Top 30 | Indians Top 30 | Padres Top 30

The Reds, Padres and Indians pulled off a three-team blockbuster that saw Trevor Bauer dealt to the Reds and Yasiel Puig land in Cleveland. As far as the prospects are concerned, two Top 100 prospects are switching teams.

The Indians got the biggest prospect haul in this deal as they've acquired both Allen and Moss. Allen, an eighth-round pick from the 2015 Draft, made his Major League debut earlier this year, but has spent the bulk of the year with Triple-A El Paso. Allen's numbers are a bit inflated because the Pacific Coast League is extremely hitter friendly, but he operates with a low-to-mid 90s heater and has a plus changeup that plays well off his fastball. Moss, a lefty currently in Double-A, is also headed to Cleveland. The 24-year-old Florida product has pitched to a 3.44 ERA this season and struck out 123 over 102 innings.

Trammell, the 35th overall pick from the 2016 Draft, is hitting .236 over 94 games in his first experience at the Double-A level. However, the 21-year-old has an impressive set of tools and a natural feel for the game. Trammell, a multi-sport athlete in high school, also has plus speed that allows him to track down balls in center and helps him impact the game on the basepaths.

July 30
Braves trade LHP Kolby Allard (No. 10) to the Rangers for RHP Chris Martin
Braves Top 30 | Rangers Top 30

The Braves have a wealth of pitching depth in their farm system and opted to tap into it for more immediate pitching help as they continue to push toward October. Chris Martin, who has pitched to a 3.08 ERA with 43 strikeouts over 38 innings this season, will bolster the Braves' 'pen, while Allard will report to Triple-A Nashville. The lefty, a first-round Draft pick from 2015, doesn't have overpowering stuff, but commands it well. The 21-year-old has pitched to a 4.17 ERA over 20 starts in Triple-A this year and also made three appearances in the Majors, though he gave up 11 earned runs in eight innings.

July 29
Cubs trade RHP Thomas Hatch (No. 29) to the Blue Jays for RHP David Phelps
Cubs Top 30 | Blue Jays Top 30

Hatch, a third-round Draft pick (2016) out of Oklahoma State, had been solid of late for Double-A Tennessee. The 24-year-old has surrendered one run or fewer in each of his past three starts and has pitched to a 4.59 ERA through 21 starts this season. Overall, Hatch, who is repeating Double-A, got off to a slow start this season and posted ERAs over 5.00 in both April and May and then had a 4.97 ERA in June. While Hatch's past few outings have been encouraging, it remains to be seen whether he can maintain the the success.

July 28
Mets trade LHP Anthony Kay (No. 4) and RHP Simeon Woods-Richardson (No. 6) to the Blue Jays for RHP Marcus Stroman
Blue Jays Top 30
| Mets Top 30

In the biggest and most surprising move so far, the Mets landed Stroman from the Blue Jays in exchange for a pair of pitching prospects. Kay, who was the Mets’ No. 4 prospect at the time of the deal, has pitched across two levels this season and is 8-6 with a 3.13 ERA. The 24-year-old was a first-round pick in the 2016 Draft, who possesses solid command and can eventually become a middle-of-the-rotation starter. Woods-Richardson, an 18-year-old whom the Mets grabbed in the second round of last year’s Draft, put together an impressive professional debut and has a mid-to-upper 90s fastball, but needs to show that he’s durable enough for a full season. So far, the Texas prep product has held up well and has racked up 97 strikeouts over 78 1/3 innings at the Class A level.

July 28
Rays trade RHP Ian Gibaut (No. 30) to the Rangers for a PTBNL
Rays Top 30
| Rangers Top 30

The Rays dealt Gibaut to the Rangers after he had previously been designated for assignment. The 25-year-old right-hander spent the majority of the season with Triple-A Durham, but was called up earlier in July to make his Major League debut. With the Bulls, Gibaut, who missed the first two months of the year with a lat strain, has fanned 16 over 10 1/3 innings and in his brief stint in the Majors he gave up two runs over two frames. Gibaut was initially assigned to Triple-A Nashville, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him pitching in the Rangers bullpen before the season comes to a close.

July 27
Twins trade 1B Lewin Diaz (No. 30) to the Marlins for RHP Sergio Romo, RHP Chris Vallimont (No. 23) and a PTBNL
Twins Top 30 | Marlins Top 30

Diaz, whom the Twins signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2013, was dealt to the Marlins in exchange for Sergio Romo, Vallimont and a player to be named later. The 22-year-old first baseman has plenty of offensive potential and has truly started to tap into his power this year. After hitting .224 over 79 games last season, Diaz is hitting .294 over two levels this year and has also already crushed a career-high 19 homers.

Vallimont, a fifth-round pick from last year's Draft, features a mid-90's fastball and a sweeping slider, but command hasn't been his strong suit. Vallimont's command has improved this year and his ability to add a few extra miles per hour to his fastball in short stints, may portend a future as a reliever. The 22-year-old has pitched to a 3.16 ERA this season and has 122 strikeouts over 105 1/3 innings.

July 14
Athletics trade SS Kevin Merrell (No. 17) to the Royals for RHP Homer Bailey
A's Top 30 | Royals Top 30

Oakland, in need of pitching help, shipped Merrell off to Kansas City in exchange for Homer Bailey. Merrell, the 33rd overall pick from the 2017 Draft, hit .246 over 82 games with Double-A Midland prior to the deal. The 23-year-old can play a bit of everywhere in the field, although he's mostly played shortstop as a professional, and also has 70-grade speed.

July 13
Rays trade 2B Nick Solak (No. 12) to the Rangers for RHP Peter Fairbanks
Rays Top 30 | Rangers Top 30

Solak, a second-round pick from the 2016 Draft, has already been dealt twice in his young career. After the Yankees drafted Solak, they dealt him to the Rays in February 2018 and then he was just traded again, to the Rangers for Peter Fairbanks. The 24-year-old Louisville product hit .266 with Triple-A Durham this season and although he's more of a line-drive hitter, he's also set a career high with 21 homers.
