Estrada, Travis power Jays past O's in finale

May 21st, 2017

BALTIMORE -- demonstrated pure dominance in Sunday's series finale against the Orioles. The Blue Jays' righty struck out a career-high 12 batters in Toronto's 3-1 victory.
Estrada (3-2) held the red-hot Baltimore offense to five hits, allowing just one run through 7 2/3 innings. It was the first time the Orioles have been held to less than two runs since May 7.
The Blue Jays' offense backed its pitcher in the first inning when a two-out error by extended the inning, allowing to hit a three-run homer to left.

"I've been feeling pretty good. I'm just trying to stick with the approach and trust in the process," said Travis, who extended his hitting streak to seven games and is batting .536 (15-for-28) with eight doubles during that stretch. "Thankfully, the results have been on my side lately."
Despite the home run in the first, Orioles starter had one of his strongest outings of the season, scattering six hits through seven innings with no earned runs.

"I just pitched more today," Miley said. "Rather than just throw, it was like a cat-and-mouse thing; hard fastball, soft fastball, changeup, curveball. It was more of a mix. We just made a few more pitches here and there when I fell behind, had the BP fastball to get some ground balls. That's kind of more who I'd like to be, instead of going out there and throwing it as hard as I can. I like to pitch."
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Schoop's costly error: Baltimore picked up two quick outs in the first by retiring Kevin PIllar and . It looked as though it would be a 1-2-3 inning when sent out what seemed like a routine ground ball to Schoop, but the second baseman was unable to come up with it cleanly. The Orioles paid for the extended inning two batters later, when Travis drove the first pitch he saw over the fence in left to give the Blue Jays an early three-run lead.
"We caught the break early," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "These guys play defense as good as anybody in baseball; they can rob you. We took advantage of that, Devon with the big home run on a breaking ball, but he has been hot."
Davis K's in crucial eighth inning: The Orioles started a two-out rally in the bottom of the eighth when singled up the middle, sending Estrada from the game. After Joe Smith replaced the dominant Estrada, Smith hit Manny Machado in a 2-0 count to put runners on first and second and bring Chris Davis to the plate. Davis went ahead 1-0, but went down swinging on the next three pitches.
QUOTABLE
"To be honest with you, I could catch Marco, at my age."
-- a 54-year-old Gibbons, in reference to how easy it is to work with Estrada
"Think about all the people who have played here in the past 26 years. He's going to be hard to catch. He's such a post-up guy. He comes in here and very quietly has thee hits. But he's got really great recuperative power, and he loves to play. He knows how much we depend on him. He doesn't shirk that responsibility. I don't think it surprises anybody, but it's a reminder of how good he's been for a long period of time here."
