Cahill goes on DL; Bassitt, Ramirez recalled

OAKLAND -- A's right-hander will start Friday's series opener against the Angels in place of , who was added to the disabled list with a right Achilles strain on Thursday (retroactive to Monday).
Along with Bassitt, the A's recalled right-hander from Triple-A Nashville. Lefty Danny Coulombe, who hurled a frame to help the bullpen cover 7 2/3 innings in Wednesday's loss, was optioned -- leaving the A's with an all-righty relief corps.
Cahill sustained the Achilles injury last week and hoped to avoid the DL, but he was wearing a walking boot on Thursday morning ahead of a scheduled doctor's visit and has not resumed throwing.
"We thought we had a chance to get him back, and that just wasn't the case," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "He hasn't responded, and now he's wearing the boot, so we really have no idea how long it will be. I'm not even going to try to handicap it."
Bassitt endured a tough-luck loss in Cahill's stead on Saturday, allowing just one run and three hits in seven innings against the Royals in what was his first Major League outing since April 28, 2016.
"Chris did a nice job his last time out," Melvin said. "He should take the mound with a lot of confidence."
Worth noting
Outfielder Matt Joyce, sidelined by a lumbar strain, is expected to begin a Minor League rehab assignment with Triple-A on Monday.
