Gott nearing return from injured list

NEW YORK -- The Giants have decided to wait before activating right-hander Trevor Gott from the injured list. According to manager Bruce Bochy, the team wants to see him play catch and have a bullpen session before anything is made official. Gott has been on the IL since May 25 because of a right forearm strain.

Before the injury, Gott was arguably president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi’s best acquisition to this point. Gott has a 3.00 ERA and is averaging 9.4 K/9 IP. He was acquired for cash considerations from the Nationals in February.

“He is getting more and more comfortable with experience, and getting what we are calling that sense of belonging in the Major Leagues,” Bochy said. “It started in Spring Training. He was competing for a job, and [he] handled that pressure well and earned a spot on our team. He has carried that right into the season. He has the fastball, and the breaking ball is getting better. He is on a good roll and that usually comes with confidence.”

Asked why he is more relaxed with the Giants than he was with the Nationals, Gott said, “When you are a young guy [in Washington], especially with all the moves they make, you have options and stuff. I’m not going to lie, you're kind of tense and nervous. You are always looking over your shoulder. I’m just comfortable with the Giants. And I’m pitching well.”
