Trevor Rogers' pregame routine had a family feel on Thursday.
Around 25 friends and family members made the eight-hour drive from Carlsbad, N.M., where Rogers is from, to Phoenix, which, like Denver, is one of the closest National League cities to travel to, to watch the Marlins lefty start against the D-backs.
Before the game, Rogers warmed up by playing catch with his cousin in the stands. Rogers' parents, Colleen and Mike, wore shirts that read "Take a seat" on the front and "Trevor Rogers' Neighborhood" on the back, and cousin Cody Ross, who played for the Marlins from 2006-10, was also in attendance.
Trevor was playing catch with his cousin, who loves the game of baseball. They hadn’t seen each other in a while. Rogers had around 25 people in attendance for #Marlins win. https://t.co/5YMeIdN40M
After loosening up, Rogers went out and pitched six innings of one-run, seven-strikeout baseball to beat the D-backs, 5-1, and earn his fifth win of the season.
The 23-year-old now has a 1.84 ERA on the year. Baseball players are a superstitious bunch, so maybe Rogers needs to invite his family to more of his starts.
