From newcomers to familiar faces, Twins' coaching staff for '26 is complete

November 15th, 2025

Just as the first major decision dates of the winter approach, the Twins have checked off one of their biggest tasks of the early offseason. Manager Derek Shelton’s first coaching staff with Minnesota has been finalized.

Some of the names were already known, but on Friday, the full group was announced. It includes some familiar faces, some new ones, and one person who counts as both.

Among the most newsworthy details in Friday’s announcement were that Keith Beauregard, formerly of the Tigers, will take over as hitting coach, Mark Hallberg will join as bench coach after six years with the Giants and Triple-A manager Toby Gardenhire will become the Major League field coordinator. Gardenhire is the son of longtime Twins manager Ron Gardenhire.

Mike Rabelo, who had been on Shelton’s staff for all six years in Pittsburgh, will serve as assistant bench coach. Several coaches were announced to be returning to the Twins staff as well. Ramon Borrego will move from first base coach to third base coach, Trevor Amicone and Rayden Sierra will return as assistant hitting coaches, and Luis Ramirez will return as assistant pitching coach.

Already known to be on the staff were first base coach Grady Sizemore, who will also focus on defense and baserunning, bullpen coach LaTroy Hawkins, and Pete Maki returning as pitching coach.

Hitting coach and bench coach had been the biggest remaining questions surrounding Shelton’s first Minnesota staff. In Beauregard, he gets someone who has helped oversee a turnaround in Detroit from the American League’s lowest scoring offense the year before he arrived to the fifth-highest-scoring in 2025. Particularly notable is that that rise has been largely driven by a young core including emerging stars Riley Greene, Spencer Torkelson, and Colt Keith.

If the Twins are to return to contention in 2026, one of the most essential keys to that will be for their younger hitters like Royce Lewis, Brooks Lee, and Matt Wallner to put up bigger numbers than in 2025.

In Hallberg, the Twins bring in someone who spent six years in San Francisco under two different managers and who has coached first and third base. Rabelo served as an assistant hitting coach, Major League field coordinator, and third base coach during his time with Shelton in Pittsburgh.

Gardenhire, 42, has managed in the Twins’ Minor League system since 2018 but has never had a spot on a Major League staff. He’s managed St. Paul for the past five seasons.
