KANSAS CITY -- Though the Twins lost 8-1 to the Royals on Friday night, there were two disputed replays that could have changed the complexion of the game.
In the third inning, second baseman James Dozier hit a ball down the right-field line that was ruled a foul ball instead of a two-run homer, and the play was reviewed; ultimately, it stood as called. And in the fifth, Eric Hosmer hit a ball down the left-field line that was ruled fair and also stood as called.
But after looking at the replays with the help of director of Major League video Sean Harlin, the Twins believe Hosmer's homer went around the foul pole and Dozier's was just fair. A fan even Tweeted a photo of Dozer's home run ball with a yellow mark on it that he said came from the foul pole.

"I'm more factual than emotional about it," Twins manager Paul Molitor said. "It was upsetting at the time. If you want to talk about a five-run swing, if they call Dozier's ball fair and Hosmer's ball foul, how the outcome might've changed. But we also only had two hits, so if Dozier's is fair, it's three."
The Twins believe there's more video evidence regarding Hosmer's homer being foul, but Dozier said he thought his foul ball hit the bottom of the foul pole, which should've been a homer. It was definitely hard luck for the Twins, as both calls could have gone either way. It just so happened that Hosmer's was initially called fair and Dozier's was initially called foul, and there wasn't enough clear evidence to overturn either one.
Molitor said there's nothing the Twins can do about it, but they do plan to let MLB know about the video evidence they saw, so they can make better calls in the future.
"I would imagine MLB will look at it, especially considering we have video that at least shows that Hosmer's [hit] was foul," Molitor said. "It's not a protest thing or a rules violation. It's just an imperfect system."
