Gilbert family's no-no reaction was electric

PHOENIX -- What is it like to watch your son throw a no-hitter in his first-ever Major League start?

Fans watching the broadcast of Tyler Gilbert's feat in the D-backs' 7-0 win over the Padres at Chase Field on Saturday night were treated to the reactions of his parents, Greg and Peggy Gilbert, as they sweated out the no-no.

"It was a special moment," Tyler Gilbert said. "I'm glad that they're here to witness that. That was cool. My dad was emotional, so that was nice, but I told him to relax, it's OK."

Gilbert also had his girlfriend and her parents in the stands and they all planned to go out to celebrate after the game.

While Gilbert knew they were all there, he didn't see any of their reactions or excitement until postgame.

"No, I had no idea where they were," Gilbert said. "And I didn't really look for them, either. I was just kind of doing my thing. But no, I didn't know where they were. I kind of know the area, but I wasn't like looking at all. I was just kind of trying to get deep in the game."

Greg Gilbert is an electrician and Tyler spent last summer working for him to help make ends meet since the Minor League season had been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I'm learning the trade and he was teaching me stuff here and there," Tyler Gilbert said. "You know, just trying to make some money and learn a trade and that's just the way it was. But I'd rather be here right now."
