DENVER -- The Rays checked another item off their Trade Deadline shopping list on Monday afternoon, acquiring right-handed reliever Tyler Wells from the Orioles.

In return, Tampa Bay will send right-hander Michael Forret, the club’s No. 8 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, to Baltimore. Forret, who earned a midseason promotion to Triple-A Durham, joined the Rays from the Orioles as part of the offseason trade for starter Shane Baz.

Wells put together a 2.67 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP with 53 strikeouts in 54 innings over 43 appearances for Baltimore. The 31-year-old should slot into the back end of Tampa Bay’s bullpen, joining right-hander Kevin Kelly and lefties Garrett Cleavinger and Cam Booser as late-inning options in front of All-Star closer Bryan Baker.
In three trades over the last two days, the Rays have addressed three major needs. They added a starter with front-of-the-rotation potential in Freddy Peralta, a left-handed-hitting catcher who will lengthen their contact-oriented lineup in Liam Hicks, and now a reliable reliever to bolster their bullpen in Wells.
