Texas Rangers right-handed pitcher Luke Farrell was hit in the face by a line drive off the bat of San Francisco’s Jalen Miller with one out in the ninth inning of Saturday’s game in Scottsdale.
The ball hit Farrell in the area of the right side of his jaw. He was removed from the game and attended to by Rangers and Giants medical personnel before being transferred to HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center.
Farrell underwent a CT scan and x-rays as well as a further examination, which revealed that he has a non-displaced fracture of his jaw. Farrell was released from the hospital early this evening and is expected to undergo further examination by a maxillofacial specialist on Monday.
The 27-year-old Farrell entered the game to start the bottom of the ninth inning and struck out San Francisco’s John Andreoli to begin the inning prior to Miller coming to the plate. It was Farrell’s third appearance of the spring. He was acquired on a waiver claim from the Los Angeles Angels on January 4, 2019 and is 3-4, 5.28 in 30 career major league appearances with the Royals, Reds, and Cubs.
The Rangers and Giants played to a 0-0, nine-inning tie on Saturday.
