Astudillo, 3 other Twins positive for COVID-19

July 4th, 2020

MINNEAPOLIS -- Four members of the Twins' 60-man player pool have tested positive for COVID-19, president of baseball operations Derek Falvey announced on Friday.

and tested positive as part of the intake process at Summer Camp, while Minor Leaguers Edwar Colina and Nick Gordon tested positive earlier at their home locations, separate from the intake process. On Saturday, Minnesota announced that Sanó was the club's fourth player to test positive. The Twins' announcement indicates that the players have given their approval for their names to be revealed.

The Twins also announced that seven other Minor League players in the organization have tested positive in the last several weeks. Most were around the club's Minor League facilities in Fort Myers, Fla.

Astudillo is said to be asymptomatic and quarantining at this time in Minnesota. He will be eligible to return to the club once he has tested negative twice. Falvey said that Colina has already cleared a subsequent test as he isolates at home. Gordon is also still in his home location. In any such cases, the Twins are expected to remain cautious while introducing their impacted players into camp.

Falvey also noted that an unspecified number of Twins players also have been in proximity with individuals who have tested positive, and though several of those players have already tested negative, the club is taking extra precautions with contact tracing prior to their participation in workouts.

"We just want to be cautious here on the front end as we kick it off," Falvey said.

In addition to the four players who tested positive, Cody Stashak and Byron Buxton will be late arrivals for personal reasons, as Stashak's wife recently gave birth and Buxton's wife also was imminently due. All other players expected to be in camp have arrived in the Twin Cities, Falvey said.

Earlier in the afternoon, Major League Baseball announced that 38 positive tests were found throughout the Majors among the 3,185 total samples that were collected over the first week of intake testing, marking a 1.2 percent positive rate.

"I hope that’s a reflection of our players and staff all taking this very seriously, wearing masks when they can, making sure they’re washing their hands as much as possible and limiting contact and social distancing," Falvey said. "Hopefully, that will give us a chance here collectively, now that we’ve gotten back together, to continue to follow those protocols and keep those rates relatively low as compared to ... some of the other testing that has occurred across other sports as well."

On Friday, the first day of organized workouts at Summer Camp at Target Field, players and staff members all over the field were in masks, and though the whole team isn't able to participate yet, both Kenta Maeda and Ehire Adrianza expressed their confidence in the safety protocols established by the league and the Twins as part of this unprecedented 2020 season.

"Some guys are a bit anxious. That's real," Falvey said. "And some guys are really excited to be back and ready to go and just trying to figure it out. Like anything, it's different than what we're used to or the norm. It's going to take some time. But in the early going, I think guys are enjoying the chance to be around one another again."
