ARLINGTON -- The Rangers have placed outfielder Hunter Pence on the 10-day injured list with a strained right groin muscle and activated Willie Calhoun. Pence was placed on the IL after undergoing an MRI on Monday that revealed the strain.

Calhoun was in the starting lineup on Monday night against the Indians after being sidelined since May 22 with a strained left quad muscle. He was 3-for-11 with two walks in four games at Triple-A Nashville on medical rehab assignment.

Pence is second in the American League All-Star voting at designated hitter but sustained the groin injury chasing after Jose Peraza’s double in the fifth inning of Sunday’s game against the Reds.

Pence was hitting .294 with 15 home runs, 48 RBIs and a .608 slugging percentage in 55 games. He was tied for sixth in the league in RBIs. The first day Pence could return is June 27.

Outfielder Nomar Mazara avoided the injured list after an MRI showed a mild strain in the hamstring muscle behind the right knee. He was not in the lineup on Monday, but manager Chris Woodward said Mazara could be back as the designated hitter on Tuesday.
