CLEVELAND -- As the baseball soared off Yan Gomes' bat on Sunday, Indians team president Chris Antonetti watched with awe. After everything Gomes had gone through this season, and following a comeback that was as unpredictable as it was incredible, the catcher belted a home run in his first at-bat back with the team.
"It gave me chills," Antonetti said during Tuesday's workout at Progressive Field.

Antonetti sent Gomes a text on Sunday to congratulate the catcher for all the work that went into that special moment. What Antonetti and manager Terry Francona need to discuss now is whether they will sit down with Gomes to inform him that he has made the roster for the American League Division Series against Boston.

Cleveland has until Thursday morning to officially pick its 25 players for the ALDS, which begins with Game 1 at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday on TBS. Francona said Tuesday that many of the decisions have already been made, but the team will wait until Wednesday before revealing at least some of its planned roster. The manager would not tip his hand on whether Gomes would be included.
"What I'd like to do is wait on the roster until tomorrow," Francona said on Tuesday.
Gomes originally was shelved after a collision with Twins first baseman Kennys Vargas on July 17, which resulted in a separated shoulder. By September, Gomes worked his way back to Minor League rehab games, but he had his right wrist broken by an errant pitch in a game with Double-A Akron on Sept. 14. The catcher was expected to rejoin the Indians the next day, but instead he was given a timetable of six-to-eight weeks.
While it looked at the time like Gomes was done for the season, he continued to work behind the scenes after learning that he could not really do much more damage to the non-displaced fracture. Throwing began to feel fine by the end of September and Gomes did enough hitting to convince the club to put him back in the starting lineup on Sunday in Kansas City.
Gomes caught five innings and belted a home run off Ian Kennedy.

"To know how hard he's worked," Antonetti said, "and all he's been through throughout the course of the season, for him to hit a home run -- not only for himself, but the impact it had on the team -- you just couldn't write a better script. I was just so happy for him more than anything."
Cleveland used a mix of catcher Roberto Pérez and Chris Gimenez while Gomes was sidelined. Both Francona and Antonetti have noted that the Indians could carry three catchers for the ALDS, but it remains to be seen if the Tribe would actually take that approach. If the Indians went with two catchers, Gimenez understands that he could likely be the odd-man out.
"If he's not the leader of this team, he's one of the top three," Gimenez said. "I'll do whatever they want. I couldn't care less. If I'm on the roster this time and not the next -- I understand how the game goes. Yeah, I definitely want to be out there, but I understand, he's our guy. Him and Roberto are our guys. I was lucky enough to tag along from the beginning. We'll see where it takes us."
