Yankees grant Headley an 'excused absence'

Third baseman scratched from Wednesday's win for personal reasons; return uncertain

NEW YORK -- Third baseman was scratched from the starting lineup in the Yankees' 5-0 win over the Orioles on Wednesday night for personal reasons, and he was not with the team. started at third base in his place and batted ninth.
Headley, who was originally listed as the third baseman and No. 8 hitter, was granted an "excused absence" for Wednesday's game. Right fielder , who was previously listed as the team's No. 9 hitter, moved up one slot to replace Headley in the eight hole.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi was discreet about the reasoning behind Headley's absence following the game. Given the nature of the situation, he wasn't able to shed much light on how long Headley may be out.
"He gave me a heads up about 3:30. I wasn't sure what was going to happen, and then about 5 o'clock [I knew]," Girardi said. "I'm not sure [if he'll be available Thursday]."
