LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- As Giancarlo Stanton paraded through the hotel hallways on Monday afternoon, an untucked pinstriped jersey buttoned over his white dress shirt, the Yankees savored their moment as the toast of this year's Winter Meetings.
And when Stanton traveled back to his Miami-area home, preparing for the second phase of his career in New York, general manager Brian Cashman returned to the Yankees' suite with more calls to make. The next two days laid the groundwork for moves yet to come, including a trade that cleared salary space for the team's ongoing pursuit of a starting pitcher.

New York trimmed Chase Headley's $13 million salary on Tuesday morning, agreeing to swap the switch-hitting veteran infielder and right-hander Bryan Mitchell to the Padres for outfielder Jabari Blash.
Including prior commitments and arbitration estimates, that gives the Yanks approximately $30 million with which they can address their remaining needs while still fulfilling managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner's mandate to keep payroll below $197 million and reset the team's luxury tax penalty rate.
"Obviously, we need to address some things," Cashman said. "Patience is a virtue. Really, we have between now and Spring Training. We'll see."

What's next
A source told MLB.com that the Yankees agreed to terms with left-hander Carsten Sabathia, who also drew interest from the Angels and Blue Jays. Sabathia was in Florida this week, meeting with Toronto executives near the resort.
Even though the Yankees will re-sign the 37-year-old Sabathia, who went 14-5 with a 3.69 ERA last season and expressed a preference to return to New York, it is possible that they could move for another starter.
New York contacted the D-backs about left-hander Patrick Corbin and infielder Brandon Drury, and the Yanks have been thought to be eyeing Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole, Royals left-hander Danny Duffy and Tigers right-hander Michael Fulmer in potential trades.
With vacancies at second and third base, they have contacted Baltimore about Manny Machado, though Orioles owner Peter Angelos is unlikely to approve a trade within the American League East. Cashman has also contacted the representative for free agent Todd Frazier and spoke highly of former Yankee Eduardo Nunez on Wednesday.
The Yankees have several in-house candidates for their infield jobs, and Cashman said that he would view it as a "fallback" to hand those positions to players from the group of Miguel Andujar, Thairo Estrada, Gleyber Torres, Ronald Torreyes and Tyler Wade.

The Yanks lost four players in the Major League phase: right-hander Anyelo Gomez (Braves), left-hander Nestor Cortes (Orioles), first baseman Mike Ford (Mariners) and right-hander Jose Mesa Jr. (Orioles).
In the Triple-A phase, they lost two more players: right-hander Yancarlos Baez (Twins) and catcher Sharif Othman (Marlins). They also made one Minor League selection, adding outfielder Junior Soto from the Indians.
