Germán (shoulder) to begin season on 60-day IL

March 18th, 2022

The Yankees announced Friday that they have placed right-handed pitcher Domingo Germán on the 60-day injured list due to right shoulder impingement syndrome.

Manager Aaron Boone said earlier this week that Germán began feeling discomfort in his pitching shoulder in January, which delayed his throwing program during Spring Training.

The 29-year-old made 22 appearances (18 starts) for the Yankees last season, recording a 4.58 ERA through 98 1/3 innings. He was one of the team’s better starters in 2019, as he recorded a career-best 19.2 strikeout-minus-walk percentage and 4.03 ERA through 143 innings while going 18-4.

The Yankees’ rotation options behind ace Gerrit Cole include Jameson Taillon, Luis Severino, Jordan Montgomery and Nester Cortes. But the team is reportedly looking to add to its starting staff and has been in talks with the A’s recently about pitchers Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas.

The Germán move opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for first baseman Anthony Rizzo, whose two-year deal with New York became official Thursday.
