NEW YORK -- The Yankees initially intended to have Starlin Castro on the field for Saturday's matinee against the Red Sox, but an emergency trip to the dentist changed those plans.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Castro lost one of his front teeth at some point after Friday's 4-1 loss to the Red Sox and required a root canal, which was performed early on Saturday morning.
"He has been at the dentist since 7 o'clock this morning and did not sleep much last night, so we had to go a different route," Girardi said.
Ronald Torreyes celebrated his 25th birthday by taking Castro's place at second base. Girardi said he expected Castro to be available off the bench for Saturday's game.
Bombers bits
• Aaron Judge has bounced around the order this weekend as the Yankees try to get his bat going, moving from the No. 6 spot in Thursday's series opener to the No. 2 spot for Friday's contest. Judge returned to the cleanup spot on Saturday, with Girardi saying that he believes the rookie slugger is "somewhat flexible" based upon what the Yankees need.
"We haven't asked him to change his approach," Girardi said. "No matter where you're hitting in the lineup, we expect him still to be the on-base guy and the productive guy that he's capable of being."
"I'm just a player," Judge said. "Wherever they put me, I'm just happy to be in the lineup."
• Girardi said that the Yankees have received "no clarity" on the respective appeals lodged by Gary Sanchez and Austin Romine.
Sanchez is appealing a four-game suspension and Romine is appealing a two-game ban stemming from last week's dustup with the Tigers, but the results may not be announced until Tuesday because Major League Baseball's offices are closed for Monday's holiday.
The Yankees added veteran Erik Kratz to the roster on Friday as a depth option.
"We're going to be able to get through it, but it's difficult losing your [Nos.] 1 and 2 catchers," Girardi said.
