White Sox designate Alonso; Anderson to IL

June 28th, 2019

CHICAGO -- The White Sox plan to designate first baseman/designated hitter for assignment and placed shortstop Tim Anderson on the 10-day injured list.

The club also purchased the contract of left-hander Ross Detwiler from Triple-A Charlotte and recalled outfielder Daniel Palka from Charlotte.

Alonso, 32, was acquired via trade from Cleveland for Minor League outfielder Alex Call on Dec. 15, 2018. Although the left-handed hitter was an accomplished player in his own right, he also is the brother-in-law of Manny Machado and the White Sox made a strong offseason pursuit for the free-agent third baseman. Much of the focus fell upon the Machado pursuit when Alonso arrived, with Alonso consistently handling all the inquiries with great aplomb.

Machado ultimately picked the Padres, and Alonso struggled mightily for the first time in his Major League career. Through 67 games, Alonso has a slash line of .178/.275/.301 with seven home runs, six doubles, 27 RBIs and 53 strikeouts against 29 walks. He only had 35 plate appearances during the month of June and had 15 plate appearances since June 17.

When a player's contract is designated for assignment -- often abbreviated "DFA" -- that player is immediately removed from his club's 40-man roster. Within seven days of the transaction (had been 10 days under the 2012-16 Collective Bargaining Agreement), the player can either be traded or placed on irrevocable outright waivers.

Alonso is scheduled to hold the 2019 Celebrity BaseBOWL Tournament, benefiting the Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago and the Chicago White Sox Charities, on Sunday night in downtown Chicago. The event was publicized by the White Sox via press release about 90 minutes before news of his DFA broke. White Sox coaches and players are scheduled to attend, according to the release, as well as other sports personalities and entertainers.

Catcher Zack Collins, the White Sox No. 11-ranked prospect per MLB Pipeline, figures to get more playing time at designated hitter with the impending Alonso departure. Collins is 1-for-12 with one home run, three RBIs, two walks and six strikeouts over four games played.

Anderson suffered a high ankle sprain during the Red Sox series.
