Those were the most notable moves on a busy day for the Rangers pitching staff. The Rangers also recalled pitcher Brandon Mann to reinforce the bullpen.
Gallardo, a 12-year veteran and 13-game winner for the Rangers in 2015, was signed to a Minor League contract on April 13 after refusing an outright assignment from the Reds. He was 2-1 with a 3.81 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP in 10 starts at Triple-A Round Rock. Gallardo could have opted to enter free agency if he was not called up by Friday.
He is going into the rotation while Matt Moore works out of the bullpen and Doug Fister is on the disabled list with a strained right knee. The Rangers called up left-hander Yohander Mendez to make his first Major League start on Friday and still have rookie right-hander Ariel Jurado as an option in the Minors. But the Rangers didn't want to put two untested rookies in the rotation at the same time.
"Through all the reports (Gallardo) was commanding the baseball and controlling the strike zone, competing, getting hitters out," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. "All those factors allow him to come up and compete for us."
This not the first time Bush has dealt with a right elbow injury. He missed all of 2008 when he was with the Padres after undergoing Tommy John surgery. That's why he doesn't want to push through this and he is being shut down from throwing for at least 10 days.
"My elbow has been bugging me for a while," Bush said. "It just gets tight and sore. I learned my lesson the first time. You can't push through something like this and make it worse. It just needs rest. Hopefully the recovery process will be a quick one."
Martin injured himself on Wednesday night. He was in the Rangers bullpen when the third-inning altercation broke out between catcher Robinson Chirinos and Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp. Martin came out of the bullpen to go support his teammate when he tripped over the gate. He had a scrape on his right knee, but the official injury is a sore calf muscle. He can throw, but the Rangers are concerned about his ability to field his position.
Mann and Mendez were both called up on Friday. This was the second time Mann has been with the Rangers. He pitched five scoreless innings over three appearances with them in May.
The Rangers also claimed right-handed pitcher Deck McGuire off waivers from the Blue Jays and optioned him to Round Rock. He was designated for assignment last week after posting a 6.48 ERA in four games for the Blue Jays. He was 4-2 with a 3.22 ERA in eight starts at Triple-A Buffalo and will replace Mendez in the Round Rock rotation.
Rangers beat: • Outfielder Nomar Mazara was scratched from Friday's lineup with a sore left wrist. He is day-to-day.
"He has been battling through this," Banister said. "It was a little more sore today, so we didn't want to push it."
• Catcher Jose Trevino was called up from Double-A Frisco on Friday. The Rangers needed a backup catcher while Chirinos is serving a one-game suspension.
• The Rangers made room for McGuire on the 40-man roster by placing left-handed pitcher Martin Perez on the 60-day disabled list. Perez is sidelined with inflammation in his right arm and has yet to begin a medical rehabilitation assignment. He can come off the 60-day at the beginning of July but it's unlikely he'll be ready by then.
