SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- The Oakland A's recalled infielder Franklin Barreto and selected right-handed pitcher J.B. Wendelken from Triple-A Nashville. The club also designated right-handed pitcher Santiago Casilla for assignment, and optioned right-hander Ryan Dull to Triple-A Nashville.
Barreto returns for his fourth stint with the A's this season. He is hitting .212 (11-for-52) with three doubles, three home runs, and 10 RBI in 18 games played with Oakland this season. In 50 games at Triple-A, Barreto is hitting .232 with a .346 on-base percentage, 10 home runs, 28 RBI, and three stolen bases.
This will be Wendelken's first stint on the Major League roster this season. He appeared in eight games for Oakland in 2016, finishing with a 9.95 ERA in 12.2 innings pitched. Selected in the 13th round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft by the Boston Red Sox, Wendelken was acquired by Oakland from the Chicago White Sox with Zack Erwin as a part of the Brett Lawrie trade on Dec. 9, 2015. Wendelken is 1-1 with three saves and a 3.49 ERA in 17 outings with Nashville this season, spanning 28.1 innings of work. In six minor league seasons, he is 19-20 with a 4.03 ERA in 182 appearances, 28 of which were starts.
Casilla has spent each of the last two seasons with Oakland, and eight seasons in total. This season, he has a 3.16 ERA in 26 appearances for the Athletics. In his 15-year career, he is 42-31 with 144 saves, and a 3.29 ERA including stints with Oakland and the San Francisco Giants. His 241 appearances with the Athletics are the 11th most in Oakland history.
Mengden joins Nashville's active roster after making two rehab starts with the club, during which he went 1-1 with a 4.70 ERA, eight strikeouts, and one walk in 7.2 innings pitched. With Oakland this season, he is 6-6 with a 4.47 ERA in 16 starts, including 55 strikeouts and 19 walks in 90.2 innings pitched.
Dull returns to Nashville with a 2.51 ERA in 14.1 innings pitched at the Triple-A level. In 20 games with Oakland this season, he has a 6.00 ERA with 17 strikeouts and five walks in 18.0 innings of work.
