OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland Athletics selected 30 players on the final day of the 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft. In three days, the A's selected 41 players, highlighted by their first pick, outfielder Kyler Murray, who was the 9th overall selection in the draft.
Oakland selected 19 pitchers, including 2 left-handers, 4 catchers, 8 infielders (3 1B, 2 2B, 2 SS, 1 3B), and 10 outfielders.
Oakland selected 36 college players and 5 high school players.
Of the 22 position players selected, 11 are right-handed hitters, 8 are left-handed hitters and 3 are switch hitters. The A's selected 36 college players in the draft, including 34 of the A's first 35 picks.
Draft picks with local ties include: Joe DeMers (11th round) out of the University of Washington; he played at College Park High School in Pleasant Hill, CA., Gio Dingcong (30th round) from Daly City, CA., Andrew Miller (37th Round) from Petaluma, CA. The A's selected Brandon White out of Simsbury High School with their 36th round selection; he is the grandson of longtime Oakland scout Ron Vaughn. The club also selected Austin Piscotty with their 38th round pick; Austin is the brother of current Athletics outfielder Stephen Piscotty.
11th Round:
Joe DeMers, 21, a right-handed pitcher from the University of Washington was 7-3 with a 2.46 ERA (31 ER, 113.1 IP) with 89 strikeouts for the Huskies this season. In three seasons, Demers garnered a 16-11 record with 186 strikeouts in 284.1 innings pitched. While competing for the purple and gold Demers was named to the All-Pac-12 team in 2018 along with the 2018 NCAA Conway Regional All-Tournament Team, he also received an All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention in 2017. Prior to college, he was a 4-year letter winner at College Park High School. There he was named the California Gatorade State Player of the Year, Max Preps National Player of the Year & First Team All-American, USA Today California POY & First-Team All-American, Cali HI Sports California State POY, Louisville Slugger First Team All-American. He was also a Three-time gold medalist at the USA National Team Level.
12th Round:
Noah Vaughan, 21, hit .276 (61-for-221) with 35 runs, 6 doubles, 6 triples, 14 home runs, 33 RBI and a .548 slugging percentage in 57 games for the University of Texas - Arlington. The Junior from Conroe, Texas, was a Mongtomery County Offensive MVP at College Park High School, a first-team all district and all-count selection as a senior. He was named to second-team all-district as a sophomore and junior.
13th Round:
Dallas Woolfolk, 21, a right-handed pitcher from Ole Miss was 1-1 with a 2.51 ERA (4 ER, 14.1 IP) with 16 strikeouts in 16 relief appearances this season. With the Rebels, he 5-3 with a 2.33 ERA and 65 strikeouts in 60 relief appearances. In 2017 he recorded 12 saves, the second most for a single season in school history just one shy of the school record. Woolfolk attended DeSoto Central High school and was named 2015 Third Team All-American and First Team All-Region by Perfect Game and earned All-USA Mississippi Second Team accolades by USA Today. He led his team to the first state championship in school history his senior year, earning him first team all-state honors and all-district honors.
14th Round:
Gus Varland, 21, was 7-1 with a 1.04 ERA (7 ER, 60.1 IP) with 79 strikeouts in 10 games, including 9 starts for Concordia University. In three seasons with the Bears, he was 16-7 with a 2.99 ERA (59 ER, 177.2 IP) with 203 strikeouts in 31 games, including 28 starts. He earned the following honors this season: 2018 D2CCA All-America First Team, 2018 NCBWA All-America Second Team, 2018 ABCA/Rawlings Central Region Pitcher of the Year, 2018 D2CCA Central Region Pitcher of the Year, 2018 NCBWA Central Region Pitcher of the Year, 2018 ABCA/Rawlings All-Central Region First Team, 2018 D2CCA All-Central Region First Team, 2018 NCBWA All-Central Region First Team, 2018 NSIC Pitcher of the Year and 2018 All-NSIC First Team Pitcher.
15th Round:
Calvin Coker, 21, went 3-2 with a 4.78 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 29 relief appearances and one start for Auburn. He was the most used arm out for the bullpen the Tigers' in 2017. He made 31 relief appearances which was tied for the third most in the SEC. In two years for the Tigers' he made 60 relief appearances and one starts going 6-5 with a 4.31 ERA, striking out 95 and giving up 53 ER. Prior to his time at Auburn he spent two years at Ranger College in Ranger, Texas. Coker pitched in 15 games for the Rangers and went 9-6 with a 3.30 ERA as a sophomore, striking out 74 in 87.1 innings pitched.
16th Round:
Bryce Nightengale, 21 (22 on Aug. 16), was 6-6 with a 3.45 ERA (34 ER, 88.2 IP) with 80 strikeouts in 15 starts with George Mason University. In three seasons with the Patriots, he was 8-14 with a 5.84 ERA (108 ER, 166.1 IP) with 122 strikeouts in 40 games, including 28 starts. Prior to his collegiate career, he played four years of baseball and four years of basketball at Allegany High School, earning three letters in each sport. In baseball, he was the 2014 Player of the Year , 2014 AMAC Player of the Year, AMAC First Team 2012 & 2013, First Team Cumberland Times-News All Area 2013 and 2014 and a Perfect Game Preseason Atlantic Region honorable mention.
17th Round:
Devin Foyle, 21, hit .324 with 15 doubles, 9 home runs and 39 RBI in 50 games for the University of Kansas. In his career for the Jayhawks, Foyle posted a .287 average with 44 doubles, 13 home runs and 101 RBI in 163 games. In his sophomore season he was names to the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team and was a two-time Athletic Director's & Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll member. In his freshman season he was named the 2016 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and the 2016 Bob Allison Rookie of the Year. In high school he was a seven-time letter winner at Fountain Hills HS splitting time between baseball and soccer. In his senior year he led the state of Arizona with 12 home runs and the country with a 1.452 slugging percentage.
18th Round:
Cobie Vance, 20 (21 on Aug. 24), hit .293 (66-for-225) with 43 runs, 11 doubles, 1 triple, 6 home runs, 28 RBI and a .401 on-base percentage in 56 games with the University of Alabama. He led the Tide in hits (66), runs (43) and total bases (97) while tying for the team lead in stolen bases with seven. He led Alabama in hits during conference play with 38 and tied for 11th in the SEC during the regular season in that category. Also finished his junior season atop the Tide offensive ranks in SEC play for average (.297), runs (20) and total bases (57). He was drafted in the 16th round, 484th overall, by Cleveland in the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft after being ranked as the ninth-best player in North Carolina and the №2-ranked second baseman in the state coming out of high school. Was a 2013 and 2014 Underclass Honorable Mention honoree by Perfect Game.
19th Round:
Matt Cross, 20, out of Niagara County Community College hit .340 with 4 home runs and 53 RBI in 51 games with the Thunderwolves. His sophomore year he was named an ABCA/Rawlings NJCAA Division III Gold Glove winner, he was also named as an All American.
20th Round:
Max Schuemann, 20 (21 on June 11), hit .317 (72-for-227) with 43 runs, 16 doubles, 4 home runs, 30 RBI and a .400 on-base percentage with Eastern Michigan University. In three seasons with the Eagles, he hit .271 (135-for-499) with 73 runs, 23 doubles, 1 triple, 6 home runs and 68 RBI in 156 games. He was an All-MAC Second Team selection. He attended Portage Northern High School where he helped his team to three district championships, one conference title, and to the state final in his career. He hit .490 with 33 RBI's and 41 runs during his junior campaign and was named to the Dream Team and All-State team his senior year, while garnering Kalamazoo Dream Team accolades and first team All-District honors his junior year.
21st Round:
Daniel Martinez, 19, out of Riverside Community College went 7-4 with a 2.51 ERA (25 ER, 89.2 IP) with 77 strikeouts for the Tigers. When Martinez wasn't on the mound he made the rest of his starts in the infield. Martinez hit .297 with 12 doubles, 1 triple and 3 home runs and knocking in 23 RBI. Martinez was named SoCal player of the week by the California Community College Baseball Association. His freshman year he made 5 appearances with the University of California Riverside. He went 1-1 and posted a 4.50 ERA with 12 strikeouts in 14 innings. In 2016 he was named a Perfect Game Preseason All-American and All-Region Team.
22nd Round:
Aiden McIntyre, 22 (23 on Aug. 27), was 2-9 with a 5.77 ERA (47 ER, 73.1 IP) with 105 strikeouts in 13 starts with Holy Names University. In two seasons with the Hawks, he was 7-15 with a 5.13 ERA (87 ER, 152.2 IP) with 155 strikeouts in 25 starts. His 10 strikeout performance on May 10 earned the honor of PacWest Pitcher of the Week. McIntyre had 105 strikeouts which led the conference during the 2018 regular season. The Apache Junction native previously pitched at San Diego City College.
23rd Round:
Jonah Bride, 22, a third baseman out of the University of South Carolina was rated the №50 best third baseman in the nation by D1Baseball. The senior, hit .307 with 12 doubles, 1 triple, and 4 home runs collecting 31 RBI. In three years with the Gamecocks, he hit .290 with 36 doubles, 11 home runs and 95 RBI. In 2016 he was named to the SEC Community Service Team and the SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll. His freshman year was spent at Neosho Junior College, where he hit .471 and set a single-season school record for hits with 96. He earned second-team NJCAA All-America honors and first-team All-Jayhawk Conference honors in 2015. He went to Owasso High School in Owasso, Oklahoma, where he was named a 2014 Louisville Slugger HS All-American by Collegiate Baseball.
24th Round:
Dakota Mills, 23 (24 on Sept. 12), was 3-2 with a 3.04 ERA (18 ER, 53.1 IP) with 74 strikeouts in 33 appearances, including 2 starts with Sam Houston State University. He began his collegiate career at West Virginia as a redshirt before moving on to Blinn College where he was an All-Conference honoree. Prior to his collegiate career, he was a two-year all-district, and two-year district Player of the Year, 2013 First Team All-State and 2013 Texas High School Coaches Player of the Year. The Meadows Place, Texas native was 14-0 during his senior season and 9-2 as a junior.
25th Round:
Alonzo Jones, 21, an outfielder from Vanderbilt University hit .236 with 4 doubles, 3 triples and 2 home runs and was a perfect 16 for 16 in stolen bases, his most recent season. In his career with the Commodores he posted a .247 average hitting 22 doubles, 7 triples, and 3 home runs. Named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball in 2016. In high school he was named a Perfect Game All-American for two consecutive years (2014,2015) and earned the Columbus Valley Baseball Award. He spent some time with the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Code League where he hit 2 doubles and two triples in 27 games.
26th Round:
Leudeny Pineda, 22, was 2-4 with a 5.37 ERA (31 ER, 52.0 IP) with 44 strikeouts in 14 games, including 10 starts at ASA College Miami this season. The Azua, Dominican Republic native graduated from Romilio Mendez High School.
27th Round:
Chase Calabuig, 22, and outfielder from San Diego State University was named a member of the All- Mountain West Baseball First Team after hitting .350 with 21 doubles, 6 triples, and five home runs knocking in 46 RBI and stealing 4 bases. In three seasons with the Aztecs he hit .292 with 37 doubles, 10 triples and 13 home runs. In his sophomore year he was just one of two Aztecs to play in all 63 games, ended the season with 14-game on-base streak and a seven-game hitting streak. Was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball News his freshman year. Played 3 varsity seasons at Capistrano Valley High School where he earned a second-team all-South Coast league selection as a junior and a senior. He did not commit an error in his high school career, finishing with a 1.000 fielding percentage in 72 contests (147 total chances). He is a second cousin to former Oakland A's catcher Ron Hassey.
28th Round:
Reid Birlingmair, 21 (22 on Nov. 13), was 6-1 with a 2.12 ERA (12 ER, 51.0 IP) with 57 strikeouts in 10 games, including 8 starts with the University of Illinois Chicago this season. He was named to the Horizon League All-Academic Team. In three seasons with the Flames, he was 14-9 with a 3.84 ERA (75 ER, 175.2 IP) with 165 strikeouts in 42 games, including 26 starts. In addition to his All-Academic honors last season, Birlingmair was an All-Horizon League selection from the Flames' regular season and tournament champions. Prior to his collegiate career, he played at Nomal (Ill.) West High School where he was named Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year as a season, was on the IHSBCA All-State Team as a pitcher, was a three-time first-team All-Big 12 Selection.
29th Round:
Austin Briggs, 22, a left-handed pitcher from McNeese State University went 0-2 with a 5.22 ERA (25 ER 29.1 IP) striking out 26 in 21 appearances. In his career with the Cowboys he went 3-3 with a 3.70 ERA allowing 28 runs and striking out 48. Went to Conroe High School in Conroe, TX where he earned two letters for baseball. He was selected to the All-District second team as an outfielder.
30th Round:
Gio Dingcong, 23, hit .356 (68-for-191), with 48 runs, 15 home runs and 55 RBI in 2018 for St. Thomas Aquinas College. The Daly City, California native also swiped 21 bases and was one of only two Spartans to play in all 54 games for St. Thomas Aquinas this season. He was named All-East Region Selection by the Division II Conference Commissioners Association, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region teams.
31st Round:
Alexander Pantuso, 22, a right-handed pitcher from Slippery Rock University started 11 games for The Rock this season where he went 7-3 with a 5.49 ERA (36 ER 59 IP) fanning 86 batters. In four seasons, Alex posted a 5.44 ERA striking out 267 and giving up 128 runs. He was named to the 2018 Atlantic Region second team and was named PSAC- West Pitcher of the Week his freshman year. Pantuso was a three-time letterman in baseball at Baldwin High School and was named a first team all-section honoree. Perfect Game named him to the 2014 Preseason All-American and All-Region Teams.
32nd Round:
John Jones, 22 (23 on Oct. 9), hit .392 (76-for-194) with 49 runs, 14 doubles, 8 home runs, 59 RBI and a .588 slugging percentage in 52 games with North Greenville University this season. The Oviedo, Florida native previously played at the University of South Carolina prior to his transfer to NGU last summer. He began his collegiate career at State College of Florida in 2015, hitting .340 (66-for-194). He was selected by Minnesota in the 39th round of the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Orangewood Christian High School.
33rd Round:
Joseph Peña, 22, a shortstop out of St. Thomas Aquinas College hit .366 with 37 RBI, 50 runs scored and 37 stolen bases. A career .352 hitter, Pena hit 48 doubles 15 triples, 7 home runs and swiped 98 bases in 217 games with the Spartans. He was named Spartan Athlete of the Month for the month of March, and was a part of the NCBWA Preseason All-Region Team first team.
34th Round:
Nick Ward, 22 (23 on Oct. 19), hit .364 (59-for-162) with 69 runs, 11 doubles, 4 triples, 13 home runs and 50 RBI with a .722 slugging percentage in 48 games with West Chester University this season. He was an NCBWA Honorable Mention All-American, CCA Honorable Mention All-American, First Team All-PSAC, NCBWA First Team All-Atlantic Region, D2CCA All-Atlantic First Team, and Atlantic-ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Team (First Team). He led the team and the PSAC with 69 runs scored and 1.44 runs per game (№3 nationally). In three seasons at West Chester, he combined to hit .337 (189-for-561) with 175 runs, 28 doubles, 9 triples, 25 home runs, 121 RBI and a .553 slugging mark. The Kennett Square, Pennsylvania native attended Unionville High School.
35th Round:
Brandon White, 18, from Simsbury, Connecticut is the grandson of longtime A's scout Ron Vaughn. The right-handed pitcher was recently named to the All-Central Connecticut Conference team and played 3 years on varsity for Simsbury High school. White also served as an East Coast Area Code Team representative and is an honor roll student.
36th Round:
Chad Bryant, 18 (19 on Aug. 3), was 1-5 with a 6.65 ERA (35 ER, 47.1 IP) with 46 strikeouts in 13 games, including 11 starts with Pensacola State College this season. He was selected in the 39th round of the 2018 MLB First-year Player Draft out of Thomasville High School in Alabama.
37th Round:
Andrew Miller, 18, a first baseman from Petaluma, CA was a major part of a Casa Grande High School baseball team that won a North Bay League championship in 2017. In 2017 he played 27 of 29 games batting .370 with 30 hits, 10 of those were extra base hits (seven doubles, three home runs). He racked up 32 RBI and scored 22 runs.
38th Round:
Austin Piscotty, 22, played four seasons at St. Mary's College, appearing in 135 games. Austin is the brother of current A's outfielder Stephen Piscotty. Prior to his collegiate career, he played baseball at Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton, California where he earned All-East Bay Athletic League and co-Team MVP honors. As a junior, he helped Amador Valley win the North Coast Section Division I championship while also earning All-EBAL honors.
39th Round:
Hudson Haskin, 19, an outfielder from Bronxville, NY was named 2018 Rawlings-Perfect Game Honorable Mention and an All-American (Northeast - All Region 1st Team). Haskin is a 2-year varsity letter winner out of Avon Old Farms High School. He was also named Perfect Game Underclass Honorable Mention for two consecutive years (2016,2017).
40th Round:
Lyndon Weaver, 18, was a 2018 Rawlings-Perfect Game Honorable Mention All-American (Southeast - All Region 2nd Team). He was also a 2016 & 2017 Underclass High Honorable Mention.
