OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland A's will host Cesar Chavez Day on March 31, becoming the first team in Major League Baseball to dedicate a day in his honor, the team announced today.
As part of the celebration, Cesar's sisters Rita and Eduwieges Chavez and nephew Rudy Medina-Chavez will throw out a commemorative first pitch ahead of the 1:05 p.m. game against the Los Angeles Angels.
The A's will also proudly host more than 200 members of the Chavez family, along with a number of community leaders and nonprofit organizations.
Rudy Medina-Chavez will join Deportes 1010 hosted by Jose Orellana on the A's Spanish Radio partner, KIQI 1010, on Friday, March 23, at 8 p.m. The interview will also air on KATD 990.
Oakland has long been a part of the Chavez legacy, dating back to the 1950s when Cesar began organizing around the Fruitvale District and greater Oakland. Cesar Chavez Day is a national holiday that celebrates the birth and legacy of the civil rights and labor movement activist on March 31 of each year.<p.>In addition to the pregame tributes to Cesar Chavez, the A's will honor Chavez's commitment with an outdoor billboard in the historic Fruitvale district.</p.>
