Blue Jays Set 40-Man Roster

The TORONTO BLUE JAYS have announced the following roster moves:

  • INF SANTIAGO ESPINAL has been selected to the Major League roster from Triple-A Buffalo.
  • RHP THOMAS HATCH has been selected to the Major League roster from Double-A New Hampshire.
  • LHP TIM MAYZA has been assigned outright to Triple-A Buffalo.
  • RHP JUSTIN SHAFER has been designated for assignment.

Toronto’s 40-man roster now stands at 40.

ESPINAL, 25, started last season with Double-A New Hampshire where he batted .278 with 27 extra-base hits in 94 games. He was promoted to Triple-A Buffalo on August 3 and wrapped up his season with a .317/.360/.433 line across 28 contests for the Bisons. The 5-10, 175 lb. right-handed hitter joined the Blue Jays in 2018 when he was acquired from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for OF Steve Pearce and cash considerations. He has played 395 Minor League games over the course of four seasons while combining for a .285 batting average, 74 doubles, 11 triples, 21 home runs, and 187 RBI.

HATCH, 25, posted a 4.12 ERA while splitting his 2019 campaign between Double-A Tennessee and Double-A New Hampshire. The Tulsa, OK, native was acquired from the Chicago Cubs on July 30 in exchange for RHP David Phelps and cash considerations. In his six starts with the Fisher Cats, the 6-1, 200 lb. righty went 2-3 and registered a 2.80 ERA while recording 34 strikeouts and two walks over 35.1 innings pitched. Hatch has an overall record of 19-30 to go with a 3.99 ERA across three Minor League seasons.

MAYZA, 27, held a 1-3 record with a 4.91 ERA across a team-leading 68 relief appearances with Toronto last season. He was placed on the 60-day injured list after undergoing Tommy John surgery on the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow on September 18. The lefty holds a 4-3 record with a 4.67 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP over three seasons with Toronto.

SHAFER, 27, posted a 3.86 ERA in 34 relief appearances over five stints for the Blue Jays last season, striking out 39 batters in 39.2 innings. The 6-2, 195 lb. righty also made 24 appearances for Triple-A Buffalo, where he held a 3.52 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP while converting seven of eight save opportunities. The Lake Wales, FL native was selected by the Blue Jays in the 8th round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft. He has accumulated a 3.75 ERA across 40 Major League games and has a 3.82 ERA over the course of six Minor League seasons.
