ST. LOUIS, Mo., July 18, 2022 – The St. Louis Cardinals selected eight players on the second day of the 2022 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, bringing their total to 10 picks over the first two days of this year’s event. 

Seven pitchers, two outfielders, and one catcher were chosen on Monday. This year’s draft marked first time in franchise history that St. Louis chose left-handed pitchers with their first three overall selections, while this was the first time St. Louis selected college players with its initial 10 picks since the 2006 draft (first 11 were college players).

“We are extremely pleased with our 10 selections at the conclusion of Day Two,” said Cardinals Assistant General Manager and Director of Scouting Randy Flores. “Our department struck a good balance this afternoon with our first handful of selections, as we chose three position players and two pitchers, which ultimately led us to tap into some unique arms and profiles with our remaining picks. We look forward to regrouping and having the staff prepare our board for the final ten rounds tomorrow.” 

Brycen Mautz (pronounced mauw-tz) the Cardinals second round pick (59th overall) from the University of San Diego, is a 6-foot-3, 190 lb. left-handed pitcher was selected on his 21st birthday to cap off the club’s first day. Mautz was 10-2 with a 3.87 ERA with 129 strikeouts (11th-most in Division I) in 16 games (90.2 IP) in 2022. He was selected to the All-WCC First Team and named a Perfect Game Third Team All-American.

Pete Hansen, the Cardinals third round pick (97th overall) out of the University of Texas, is a 6-foot-3, 190 lb., left-handed pitcher, who went 11-3 with a 3.76 ERA with 120 strikeouts (T-16th most in Division I) in 17 games (107.2 IP). He was a unanimous selection to the 2022 All-Big 12 First Team and pitched a two-hit complete game shutout with a season-high 12 strikeouts on April 8 vs. TCU. He was a NCBWA Third Team All-American and Collegiate Baseball Team All-American.

Jimmy Crooks III, the Cardinals fourth round pick (127th overall) out of the University of Oklahoma, is a 6-foot-1, 210 lb. left-handed hitting catcher. Crooks batted .305 (76-249) with nine home runs, 21 doubles, and 51 RBI in 69 games while throwing out 20 of 45 runners attempting to steal for the Sooners, who finished runner-up in the College World Series. Crooks was also a Preseason NCBWA Third Team All-American, ABCA Central All-Region Second Team.

Victor Scott II, the Cardinals fifth round pick (157th overall) out of the University of West Virginia, is a 5-foot-11, 190 lb. outfielder who hit .278 (54-194) with six home runs, 12 doubles, and 47 RBI in 55 games this season. Considered among the fastest players in this year’s draft, Scott established a new school single-season record 38 stolen bases this season, 6th-most in NCAA Division I. Both of his father and mother ran track at Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Ga., and his father is in the school’s Hall of Fame. 

Max Rajcic (pronounced like "magic"), the Cardinals sixth round pick (187th overall) out of the University of California-Los Angeles, is a 6-foot, 210 lb. right-handed pitcher who went 8-5 with a 3.28 ERA (85.0 IP) and 92 strikeouts in 15 starts for the Bruins. The ABCA West All-Region Second Team pitcher took over as the Bruins’ No. 1 starter this spring after serving as UCLA’s closer as a freshman. Before his time at UCLA, Rajcic was the top starter on USA Baseball’s 18U National Team that won a silver medal at the 2019 18U World Cup in South Korea. His signature outing came on May 13 against Washington State, striking out a career-high 14 while pitching the first 8.0 innings of a combined one-hitter.

Alex Iadisernia (pronounced eye-uh-de-sir-nee-uh), the Cardinals seventh round pick (217th overall) out of Elon University (N.C.). The 5-foot-11, 180 lb. left-handed hitting outfielder hit .276/.383/.463 with nearly as many walks (33) as strikeouts (37). He was named Colonial Athletic Association Co-Rookie of the Year and a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American in 2021. Iadisernia becomes the sixth player drafted by St. Louis out of Elon, while also becoming only the sixth overall Phoenix hitter to be drafted in the first ten rounds of the MLB draft.

Cade Winquest, the Cardinals eighth round pick (247th overall) out of the University of Texas at Arlington, is a 6-foot-2, 205 lb. right-handed pitcher who went 2-4 with a 5.40 ERA (58.1 IP) and 57 strikeouts in 15 games (12 starts). Winquest, who went 1-0 with a 2.79 ERA (19.1 IP) and 22 strikeouts for Chatham in the 2021 Cape Cod League, is the first player drafted by the Cardinals from the UT-Arlington.

Joseph King, the Cardinals ninth round pick (277th overall) out of the University of California-Berkeley, is a 6-foot-1, 194 lb. right-handed pitcher who led Cal in innings pitched (72.2), starts (14) & wins (5) during his junior season in 2022. King was 5-3 and posted a 3.72 ERA with 60 strikeouts to just 15 walks, ranking third in the Pac-12 with 1.86 walks allowed per nine innings.

Tanner Jacobson, the Cardinals tenth round pick (307th overall) out of Queens University of Charlotte (N.C.), is a 6-foot-1, 190 lb. right-handed pitcher who went 5-3 with a 4.09 ERA (61.2 IP) with 79 strikeouts in 16 games (eight starts) in his senior season. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native is the first player drafted out of Division II Queens University.
