Cubs activate LHP Mike Montgomery

The Chicago Cubs today activated left-handed pitcher Mike Montgomery off of the 10-day disabled list. Right-handed pitcher Alec Mills has been optioned to Triple-A. Additionally, right-handed pitcher James Norwood has been optioned to Triple-A after serving as the "26th man" yesterday against the New York Mets.

The Chicago Cubs today activated left-handed pitcher Mike Montgomery off of the 10-day disabled list. Right-handed pitcher Alec Mills has been optioned to Triple-A. Additionally, right-handed pitcher James Norwood has been optioned to Triple-A after serving as the "26th man" yesterday against the New York Mets.

Montgomery will make the start for the Cubs tonight when they play their make-up game against the Atlanta Braves at SunTrust Park.

The 29-year-old Montgomery was placed on the disabled list on August 17 with left shoulder inflammation and did not require a rehab assignment as part of his return. He has gone 4-4 with a 3.62 ERA (40 ER/99.1 IP) in 32 appearances, including 13 starts, with the Cubs this season. Tonight, Montgomery will match his 14 starts with the Cubs from last season, two shy of his career-high 16 starts with Seattle in 2015. Overall, Montgomery has gone 4-3 with a 3.08 ERA (25 ER/73.0 IP) in his 13 starts this season, limiting foes to a .679 OPS.

Montgomery was acquired by the Cubs from Seattle at the trade deadline in 2016 and recorded the final out of the World Series later that Fall. He went 7-8 with three saves and a 3.38 ERA (49 ER/130.2 IP) in 44 appearances, 14 starts, with the Cubs last season, setting a career high in innings pitched and strikeouts (100).

Mills, 26, has gone 0-1 with a 3.55 ERA (5 ER/12.2 IP) in three appearances (two starts) with the Cubs this season. He is 5-12 with a 4.84 ERA (67 ER/124.2 IP) in 23 starts with Iowa this year.  

Norwood, 24, has gone 0-1 with a 4.76 ERA (3 ER/5.2 IP) in five relief appearances with the Cubs this year. He has gone 2-3 with two saves and a 2.50 ERA (14 ER/50.1 IP) in 40 relief appearances between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa this season.
