CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs today selected the contract of infielder Mike Freeman from Triple-A Iowa. Freeman, who will wear uniform number 4, will be available for the Cubs tonight when they continue their three-game series against the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Freeman, 31, batted .274 (83-for-303) with 15 doubles, six home runs and 38 RBI in 78 games for Iowa this season. He posted a .330 on-base percentage and a .396 slugging percentage, good for a .726 OPS. Freeman saw action at shortstop (55 games), second base (16 games), center field (four games) and third base (one game) with Iowa this year.
The left-handed batter joins the Cubs for the second September in a row, as he played in 15 games last year and batted .160 (4-for-25) while playing shortstop and second base. He has played parts of the last two major league seasons with Arizona (2016), Seattle (2016-17), the Dodgers (2017) and the Cubs (2017).
Chicago's active roster now stands at 36 players.
