The Detroit Tigers will join Major League Baseball and all MLB Clubs in a league-wide effort to raise childhood cancer awareness by dedicating a special day at Comerica Park on September 9th. This is a continuation of the inaugural "Childhood Cancer Awareness Day," which Major League Baseball is launching on Friday, September 2nd.
The Tigers, along with FOX Sports Detroit and CBS Radio, have teamed up with St. Baldrick's Foundation and Children's Hospital of Michigan Foundation to support treatment and research towards ending pediatric cancer. These foundations are two of the area's top organizations leading the fight to promote research to find cures for the many types of childhood cancer.
Fans can support these organizations by purchasing the Pediatric Cancer Awareness ticket package that includes one of the following: a lower baseline box, upper infield box, upper baseline box or upper reserved ticket, an exclusive Detroit Tigers Pediatric cancer Awareness t-shirt and $5 donation to St. Baldrick's Foundation or Children's Hospital of Michigan Foundation (fans can make their donation preference at time of package purchase). To purchase the ticket package, visit tigers.com/children.
All fans attending the game on September 9th are encouraged to wear gold, the official color of pediatric cancer awareness. There will be a variety of special activities along the concourse including face painting, interactive games and educational materials to provide young Tigers fans and their families with a unique entertainment experience.
The Tigers will donate several hundred tickets to patients and families affected by pediatric cancer along with volunteers and staff members from St. Baldrick's and The Children's Hospital of Michigan Foundations.
In conjunction with Pediatric Cancer Awareness month, the Detroit Tigers Foundation, an affiliate of Ilitch Charities, will sell 500 limited edition custom bow ties. Proceeds from the sale of the bow ties will benefit the Detroit Tigers Foundation and the ChadTough Foundation. Beginning in September, bow ties can be purchased by visiting tigers.com/bowtie.
In partnership with Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C), MLB encouraged Clubs to support this new initiative in commemoration of childhood cancer awareness month through a variety of special activations. On September 2nd, all Major League players, coaches, umpires and grounds crew members will wear gold ribbon decals and wristbands to further promote awareness for childhood cancer, which is the leading cause of death by disease in children aged 15 and under in the United States. In Canada, more than 1,500 children will be diagnosed with cancer this year. Every year, an estimated 250,000 new cases of cancer affect children under the age of 20 worldwide.
All Clubs were able to choose to partner with local nonprofits, including hospital partners or organizations focused on childhood cancer, for their Childhood Cancer Awareness Day activations.
MLB Advanced Media will coordinate a digital effort to increase exposure of this effort by placing information and editorial features on MLB.com, Club sites and MLBCommunity.org.
MLB and Clubs have supported the fight against cancer over the years. As Stand Up To Cancer's founding donor, Major League Baseball has provided both financial support (nearly $40 million) and countless opportunities to build the Stand Up To Cancer grassroots movement by encouraging fans around the world to get involved. MLB has recognized SU2C for the past six years during the World Series. Recent Club activations have included special gold pediatric cancer awareness batting practice t-shirts, online campaigns to empower fans to become fundraisers for pediatric cancer research and donations to local children's hospitals. Previous league-wide efforts included a $1 million donation to the CureSearch National Childhood Cancer Foundation.

Detroit Tigers Foundation Custom Bow Ties
Beginning in the month of September, the Detroit Tigers Foundation will sell 500 limited edition custom bow ties in recognition of Pediatric Cancer Awareness month. Proceeds from the sale of the bow ties will benefit the Detroit Tigers Foundation and the ChadTough Foundation. Chad Carr was the grandson of former University of Michigan Head Football Coach, Lloyd Carr. In the fall of 2015, Chad sadly lost his battle with an inoperable brain tumor called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Giloma (DIPG). In honor of Chad's favorite color, orange, the bow tie design features a pattern of orange home plates each with a likeness of Chad flexing his muscles. The home plates lay over a blue background, reminiscent of the hundreds of orange balloons released to the blue sky following Chad's celebration of life memorial service. The first 500 Bow Ties are numbered with a gold sticker on the custom Bow Tie box, in honor of Chad's love for stickers and featuring Gold, the color of Childhood Cancer Awareness. Beginning in September, bow ties can be purchased by visiting tigers.com/bowtie.
