SAN FRANCISCO – The Giants announced that they have signed right-handed pitcher Trevor Rosenthal to a one-year Major League contract for the 2022 season at a rate of $4.5 million. Rosenthal can make an additional $1 million in performance bonuses for games pitched at the Major League level in 2022: $50,000 each for 15 and 18 games pitched; $150,000 for 23 games pitched; $200,000 for 28 games pitched; $250,000 for 33 games pitched; and $300,000 for 38 games pitched. He can also earn an additional $1 million in performance bonuses for games finished at the Major League level in 2022: $100,000 for 12 games finished; $150,000 for 15 games finished; $250,000 each for 18, 21 and 24 games finished.

Rosenthal, 32, last pitched in the Majors in 2020, appearing in 23 combined games for the Kansas City Royals and San Diego Padres. He went 1-0 with a 1.90 ERA (5er, 23.2ip), 11 saves and 38 strikeouts. Overall, Rosenthal struck out 41.8% of the total batters he faced in 2020 (38 of 91), amassed a 14.5 K/9 rate and also posted a 0.85 WHIP.  

He missed the entire 2021 season after undergoing surgery to correct Thoracic Outlet Syndrome that April and then undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip last July.  

In his eight-year Major League career, Rosenthal has recorded 132 saves with a 3.36 ERA and 490 strikeouts in 364.0 career innings pitched over 373 games. He spent the first six years of his career in St. Louis, where he was an All-Star in 2015 after posting a 2.10 ERA and 48 saves in 68 games for the Cardinals. In his six years in St. Louis from 2012-2017, he posted a 2.99 ERA with 121 saves while striking out 435 batters in 325.0 innings. He’s also pitched for the Nationals and Tigers (both in 2019) as well as the aforementioned Royals and Padres in 2020.  

In 27 career postseason games, Rosenthal is 1-0 with a 2.40 ERA (8er, 30.0ip), eight saves and 48 strikeouts in 30.0 innings.  

Rosenthal has been placed on the 15-day Injured List with a left hamstring strain and will rehab in Arizona while he recovers. RHP Mauricio Llovera has been transferred to the 60-day Injured List to make room for Rosenthal on the 40-man roster.
