Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that infielder Tyler Smith has been claimed off waivers by Texas.
 
Smith, 26, was designated for assignment on Friday (7/28). In 84 games with AAA Tacoma this season, Smith hit .239 (68x285) with 34 runs, 13 doubles, 6 home runs and 28 RBI in 84 games with AAA Tacoma this season. The 6-foot, 195-pound infielder made his Major League debut with the Mariners on June 2 vs. Tampa Bay. He doubled in his first Major League plate appearance. In 10 games with Seattle this season, he hit .188 (3x16) with 2 runs, 1 double and 1 RBI. Since being optioned to Tacoma on June 20, he hit .207 (23x111) with 15 runs, 5 doubles, 1 home run and 10 RBI in 33 games with the Rainiers. In five minor league seasons with Seattle, he has hit .274 (496x1811) with 241 runs, 95 doubles, 13 triples, 26 home runs and 178 RBI in 498 career games. He was selected by Seattle in the 8th round of the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Oregon State University (Corvallis, OR).
