Mariners acquire infielder Jose Caballero from Arizona

Seattle sends RHP Mike Leake and cash considerations to the Diamondbacks.

ARLINGTON, Texas. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that the club has acquired minor league infielder Jose Caballero from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for right-handed pitcher Mike Leake and cash considerations. 

Caballero, 22 (turns 23 on Aug. 30), is batting .268 (44x164) with 36 runs scored, 12 doubles, 3 home runs, 12 RBI, 24 walks and 38 stolen bases in 43 games with High-A Visalia this season. He was named a Mid-Season California League All-Star. He was placed on the minor league, 7-day injured list on May 31.

Caballero was originally selected by the Diamondbacks in the 7th round of the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft from Chipola College in Marianna, FL. He has appeared in 3 minor league seasons in the Diamondbacks organization, batting .292 (165x566) with 103 runs scored, 32 doubles, 7 triples, 14 home runs, 67 RBI, and 49 stolen bases in 149 career games.

Leake, 31, went 9-8 with a 4.34 ERA (66 ER, 137.0 IP) with 100 strikeouts and 19 walks in 22 starts with the Mariners this season. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound right-hander was 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA (10 ER, 23.1 IP) with 5 home runs allowed in his first 4 starts of the season (March 30 - April 16), but was 5-6 with a 4.84 ERA (45 ER, 83.2 IP) in 13 starts from April 21 - June 27. Since July 3, he is 2-1 with a 3.30 ERA (11 ER, 30.0 IP) in his last 5 starts. The Mariners were 11-11 in Leake's 22 starts this season. 

Leake was acquired by the Mariners, along with cash considerations and international slot money, from St. Louis in exchange for minor league infielder Rayder Ascanio on Aug. 30, 2017. He made 58 starts with the Mariners over 3 seasons, going 22-19 with a 4.21 ERA (166 ER, 354.2 IP). In parts of 10 Major League seasons with the Reds (2010-15), Giants (2015), Cardinals (2016-17) Mariners (2017-19), Leake is 102-95 with a 4.05 ERA (797 ER, 1769.0 IP) with 1,204 strikeouts and 395 walks in 291 appearances (286 starts). He was selected by Oakland in the 7th round of the 2006 MLB First-Year Player Draft but did not sign. In the 2009 Draft, he was selected and signed by Cincinnati with the 8th overall pick. He debuted with the Reds on April 11, 2010.
