Mariners add Colome; recall Atavilla; select Herrmann

SEATTLE, Wash. - Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:
• Alex Colomé, RHP, reports to club.
• Dan Altavilla, RHP, recalled from AAA Tacoma.
• Chris Herrmann, C, selected from AAA Tacoma.
• David Freitas, C, optioned to AAA Tacoma.
• Nick Vincent, RHP, placed on 10-day disabled list with strained right groin.
• Daniel Vogelbach, INF, optioned to AAA Tacoma.
• Taylor Motter, INF, designated for assignment.
Colomé (#48), Altavilla (#53) and Herrmann (#26) will be in uniform and available for today's (1:10 pm PT) game vs. the Minnesota Twins at Safeco Field.
Seattle's Major League, 40-man roster remains at 40 players. Seattle now has 7 days to trade, release or outright the contract of Motter to the minors.
Colomé, 29, was acquired by the Mariners in a 4-player trade on Friday (5/25). He ranks T4th in the American League (T8th in the Majors) with 11 saves this season; he's converted his last 10 consecutive save opportunities. Colomé has limited left-handed hitters to a .205 average (9-for-44) in 2018. In his last 15 games, he is 2-3 with 7 saves and a 1.84 ERA (3 ER, 14.2 IP) with 17 strikeouts. Overall, Alex was 2-5 with a 4.15 ERA and 11 saves in 23 games this season with the Rays.
In 2017, Colomé (COLE-uh-may) led the Majors with 47 saves and led the American League with 6 saves of four or more outs. He finished the season 2-3, 3.24 (24 ER, 66.2 IP) with 47 saves in 65 appearances. Colomé has spent his entire career with the Rays, making his debut in 2013. Overall, he is 17-18, 3.21 with 95 saves in 196 games (19 starts). Since the start of the 2016 season, his 95 saves are 2nd-most in the Majors, trailing only the Dodgers Kenley Jansen.
Altavilla, 25, appeared in 2 games with AAA Tacoma after being optioned on May 23. He tossed 1.0 scoreless inning on May 24 vs. El Paso, striking out 2. He was brought into the game last night at Las Vegas, but did not throw a pitch. In 18 relief appearances with the Mariners this season, he is 3-2 with 4 holds and a 3.24 ERA (6 ER, 16.2 IP). He has struck out 19 and walked 12 while limiting opponents to a .161 (9x56) average against. From May 12-20, he was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA (0 ER, 4.1 IP) while holding opposing hitter to a .071 (1x14) average in 5 games. He went 1-1 with 2 holds and a 1.29 ERA (1 ER, 7.0 IP) with 9 strikeouts and 3 walks in his first 7 outings of the season (3/29-4/14), but was 1-1 with 2 holds and an 8.44 ERA (5 ER, 5.1 IP) with 7 strikeouts and 6 walks in 6 games from April 17 to April 29 prior to being placed on the DL.
Altavilla was on the 10-day disabled list from May 1 (retroactive to April 30)-May 12 with right AC joint inflammation. He began a rehab assignment with AA Arkansas on May 10. He pitched 1.0 inning that night, striking out 2. Over parts of 3 Major League seasons with the Mariners (2016-c), he is 4-3 with a 3.45 ERA (29 ER, 75.2 IP) with 81 strikeouts and 33 walks in 74 relief appearances.
Herrmann, 30, hit .266 (33x124) with 24 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 6 home runs, 22 RBI and 34 walks in 37 games with Triple-A Tacoma. The 6-foot, 200-pound, left-hand hitting catcher currently ranks 2nd in the PCL and T8th in all of MiLB with 34 walks this season. He has drawn a walk in 27-of-34 games this year. Herrmann has reached base safely in 18 straight games with the Rainiers (5/4-current), batting .279 (17x61) with 13 runs scored, 5 home runs, 11 RBI and 13 walks. Among all qualifying catcher in the PCL this season, Herrmann ranks 4th, throwing out 35.0% of attempted base runners (7 CS, 13 SB). Herrmann signed as a Minor League Free Agent with Seattle on April 5, 2018 after being designated for assignment by the Arizona Diamondbacks on March 25 and released on March 28.
Herrmann is a 6-year Major League veteran with the Minnesota Twins (2012-15) and Arizona Diamondbacks (2016-17). He was originally selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 10th round of the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Drafter out of Alvin Community (TX) College. He appeared in 7 games with the Twins in 2012, including making his Major League debut on Sept. 16 vs. the White Sox (0x1). In parts of 6 Major League seasons, he is batting .202 (147x304) with 93 runs scored, 27 doubles, 5 triples, 22 home runs, 88 RBI and 75 stolen bases in 304 career games.
Freitas, 29, hit .217 (10-for-46) with 4 doubles and 2 RBI in 19 games with Seattle this season. Seattle was 8-8 in his 16 starts behind the plate. He hit .286 (8x28) with 4 doubles and 1 RBI in his first 11 games this season, but has been limited to a .111 (2x18) mark with 1 RBI in his last 8 games since April 22. He reached base safely in 13 of his 16 starts this season. The 6-foot-2, 240-pound catcher was claimed off waivers by Seattle from Atlanta on October 27, 2017. In parts of 2 Major League seasons with the Braves (2017) and Mariners (2018), he is a career .222 (14x63) hitter with 7 runs, 6 doubles, 4 RBI and 7 walks in 25 games.
Vincent, 31 (turns 32 on July 12), was removed from last night's game in the 8th inning with a strained right groin. He recorded 2 outs in the 8th last night and went to a 3-0 count on Miguel Sanó before being lifted for James Pazos. In 25 relief appearances with the Mariners this season, Vincent is 3-1 with 10 holds and a 4.09 ERA (10 ER, 22.0 IP). The 6-foot, 187-pound right-hander has struck out 23 and walked 6. Over his last 13 outings (4/28-c), he is 2-1 with 5 holds and a 2.13 ERA (3 ER, 12.2 IP) while recording 12 strikeouts and 3 walks. Vincent is in his 3rd season with the Mariners after being acquired from San Diego in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations on March 30, 2016 (sent cash considerations on July 1, 2016). In parts of 7 Major League seasons with the Padres (2012-15) and Mariners (2016-c), he is 19-14 with 4 saves and a 3.08 ERA (102 ER, 297.2 IP) with 299 strikeouts and 73 walks in 315 games.
Vogelbach, 25, went 1-for-6 with 1 run and 3 walks in 3 games with the Mariners since being recalled from AAA Tacoma on May 22. Overall this season, he is batting .200 (12x60) with 6 runs, 2 doubles, 2 home runs, 5 RBI and 10 walks in 22 games with the Mariners. He was named to his first career Opening Day roster prior to being optioned to AAA Tacoma post-game on April 25. In 24 games with the Rainiers this season, is hitting .301 (25x83) with 7 doubles, 9 home runs, 15 RBI and 22 walks with only 10 strikeouts. He has on-base percentage of .449 and is slugging .711 (1.159 OPS) in Tacoma.
Motter, 28, has spent most of the 2018 season with AAA Tacoma, where he hit .197 (29x147) with 21 runs, 6 doubles, 2 triples, 5 home runs, 21 RBI, 16 walks and 4 stolen bases in 37 games. After being recalled on April 3, he appeared in 7 games with the Mariners, batting .267 (4x15) with 2 runs, 1 home run, 1 RBI and 2 walks. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound infielder/outfielder was optioned to Tacoma on April 17. Motter was acquired by the Mariners from Tampa Bay along with Richie Schaffer (inf) in exchange for Dalton Kelly (inf), Andrew Kitteredge (rhp) and Dylan Thompson (rhp) on Nov. 18, 2016. In parts of 3 Major League seasons with the Rays (2016) and Mariners (2017-18), he is a career .198 (70x353) hitter with 42 runs, 15 doubles, 10 home runs, 36 RBI, 34 walks and 12 stolen bases in 132 games.
