Mariners announce Minor League coaching staff for 2019 season

Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto and Director of Player Development Andy McKay announced today the Mariners Minor League Coaching Staff for the 2019 season.

Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto and Director of Player Development Andy McKay announced today the Mariners Minor League Coaching Staff for the 2019 season. 
Triple-A Tacoma -- Daren Brown returns to manage Triple-A Tacoma after spending the last spending the last 3 seasons with the Mariners Double-A affiliate. Brown led Arkansas to the postseason in 2018 and was named Southern League Manager of the Year in 2016 after leading the Jackson Generals to a Southern League title. Brown enters his 22nd season in the Mariners organization and has compiled a 1231-1108 record (.526) over 20 seasons as a manager in the minor leagues. He spent 7 seasons a manager for the Rainiers from 2007-13, ranking as the winningest manager in Tacoma franchise history with 433 wins. Roy Howell will serve as the Rainiers hitting coach after spending the last 5 seasons as part of the Double-A staff and pitching coach Lance Painter, who is entering his 14th season with the Mariners, will return to the Rainiers coaching staff.
Double-A Arkansas -- Mitch Canham enters his fourth season in the Mariners minor league organization, including his first as the manager of the Mariners Double-A affiliate, the Arkansas Travelers. Over two seasons with High-A Modesto, he led the Nuts to 136-144 record, including going a perfect 6-0 during the playoffs en route to a California League Championship in 2017. Canham helmed Seattle's affiliate in the Midwest League in 2016, leading the LumberKings to a league-best 86-56 record in first season as a manager. Canham, who was born in Richland, WA, and grew up in Lake Stevens, WA, attended Oregon State and was selected in the 1st round (57th overall) by San Diego in the 2007 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Over 8 seasons in the minor leagues with the Padres (2007-2010), A's (2011), Cardinals (2012), Royals (2013) and Nationals (2014) he hit .253 (473x1872) with 243 runs scored, 90 doubles, 19 triples, 23 home runs and 238 RBI in 542 career games. Pete Woodworth will serve as the team's pitching coach, while Kyle Wilson begins his first season as the club's hitting coach. 
High-A Modesto -- Denny Hocking enters his third season in the Mariners minor league organization, including his first as the manager of the Mariners High-A affiliate, the Modesto Nuts. He managed the Clinton LumberKings in 2018 after spending the 2017 season as the Rainiers hitting coach. The 13-year Major League veteran compiled a .251 (591x2358) career average with 25 home runs and 226 RBI in 954 games with Minnesota (1993-2003), Colorado (2004) and Kansas City (2005). Jose Umbria, who coached in Clinton last season, will serve as the hitting coach, while Rob Marcello enters his first season in the organization as the team's pitching coach. 
Single-A West Virginia -- Dave Berg, who was the hitting coach for Triple-A Tacoma in 2018, will enter his first season at the helm of Seattle's affiliate in the South Atlantic League, the West Virginia Power. Berg will begin his third season since joining the Mariners organization in 2016 after spending 7 seasons as part of the Miami Marlins Player Development staff. He was selected by the Marlins in the 38th round of the 1993 MLB June Draft out of the University of Miami. Over parts of 7 seasons, Berg hit .269 (430x1600) in 582 career games with the Marlins (1998-2001) and Blue Jays (2002-04). His staff includes hitting coach Eric Farris, who coached in Everett in 2018 and pitching coach Alon Leichmon, who was on the DSL Mariners staff last season. 
Short A Everett -- Jose Moreno will manage the Everett AquaSox, Seattle's Northwest League affiliate for the third consecutive season. He enters his 19th season in the Mariners organization, including spending five seasons as the Mariners Latin America Field Coordinator prior to joining Everett. Moreno led the AquaSox to the 2010 Northwest League title and led the team to a First Half Division Title in 2018. Joe Thurston will serve as the AquaSox hitting coach, while Ari Ronick will enter his first season in the Mariners organization as the club's pitching coach. Ronick was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 12th round of the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Portland State University. He played five minor league seasons in the Giants organization (2008-12) and also spent two seasons in the Independent Leagues (2013-14). Prior to joining the Mariners, he spent nine years running Ronick Baseball in Missoula, Montana.   
Rookie Peoria -- Zac Livingston returns for his fourth season as manager with the Mariners Rookie affiliate, the Arizona League Mariners. Livingston managed the AZL Mariners to back-to-back postseason appearances in 2015 and 2016, including winning the Arizona League Championship in 2016. Prior to joining the Seattle organization, he spent four seasons as a minor league catcher in the Angels organization (2012-15) after being selected by Los Angeles in the 34th round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Arizona Christian University. Yoel Monzon will serve as pitching coach, while Connor Dawson enters his first season with the organization as the team's hitting coach.   
Dominican Academy -- Manager Austin Knight enters his third season in the Mariners organization, but his first as manager for the Dominican Summer League Mariners. He began the 2018 season as a volunteer assistant coach for Dallas Baptist University and joined Modesto as a coach in late June. After a four-year collegiate career at DBU, Knight spent the 2011-12 seasons as the Patriots volunteer assistant coach, followed by two seasons a volunteer assistant coach at Texas A&M and two seasons as Northeast Texas Community College from 2015-16. His staff includes pitching coach Jose Amancio, hitting coach David Flores and coaches Luis Caballero and Andy Bissell. Martin Valerio begins his 9th season as the Director of the Dominican Republic Academy, while Luis Matias enters his second season as Assistant of Baseball Operations (DR). 
To support the minor league managers and coaches, the Mariners player development program has assembled an 8-person group of coordinators, led by Minor League Field Coordinator Carson Vitale who returns for his second season with Seattle. Alvin Davis (9th season), Pete Harnisch (4th season) and Dan Wilson (6th season) will each serve as a Special Assistant. Hugh Quattlebaum returns as Hitting Coordinator, Tony Arnerich will be the Assistant Hitting and Catching Coordinator and Cesar Nicolas will enter his new role as Coordinator of Latin America Development, while Max Weiner joins the organization as Pitching Coordinator. Craig Manning enters his 13th season as the Minor League Video Coordinator.
