Mariners claim RHP Andrew Moore off waivers from San Francisco

Seattle designates for assignment RHP Nick Rumbelow

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

  • Andrew Moore, RHP, claimed off waivers from San Francisco.
  • Nick Rumbelow, RHP, designated for assignment.

Moore will report to Double-A Arkansas.

Seattle has 7 days to trade, release or outright the contract of Rumbelow to the minor leagues.

Seattle’s Major League, 40-man, roster remains full at 40 players.

Moore, 24 (turns 25 on June 2), was designated for assignment by San Francisco on May 11. He made 1 start with AA Richmond on May 8 vs. Trenton. He was claimed off waivers by the Giants from Tampa Bay on May 5 after being designated for assignment by the Rays on April 29. Prior to being designated by Tampa Bay, he made 5 appearances (4 starts) with Triple-A Durham. Overall, he is 0-3 with a 14.21 ERA (30 ER, 19.0 IP) with 12 strikeouts and 11 walks in 6 games (5 starts) between Durham and Richmond this season.

Moore, a 2nd round (72nd overall) pick by the Mariners in the 2015 MLB Draft, split the 2018 season with Double-A Arkansas (SEA) and Triple-A Durham (TB). He was acquired by the Rays from the Mariners along with Tommy Romero (rhp) in exchange for Denard Span (of) and Alex Colomé (rhp) on May 25, 2018. In 26 games (24) starts between Arkansas and Durham in 2018, he was 9-8 with a 3.85 ERA (57 ER, 133.1 IP) with 100 strikeouts and 43 walks.

Moore made his Major League debut with the Mariners on June 22, 2017 vs. Detroit, making the start and earning the win while allowing 3 runs over 7.0 innings. He went on to make 11 appearances (9 starts) with the Mariners in 2017. In 2016, he was named the Jamie Moyer Minor League Pitcher of the Year by the Mariners after combining for a record of 12-4 with a 2.65 ERA (48 ER, 163.0 IP) with 133 strikeouts and 31 walks in 28 starts between Advanced-A Bakersfield and Double-A Jackson. In 5 minor league seasons with Seattle (2015-18), Tampa Bay (2018-19) and San Francisco (2019), he is 26-22 with a 3.51 ERA (181 ER, 464.0 IP) with 387 strikeouts and 109 walks in 95 games (84 starts).

Rumbelow, 27, did not record a decision but had 1 save and posted a 27.00 ERA (4 ER, 1.1 IP) in 3 games with the Mariners this season. Since being optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on April 2 (post-game), he was 3-1 with a 9.19 ERA (16 ER, 15.2 IP) with 11 strikeouts and 10 walks in 13 relief appearances.

Rumbelow has appeared in the Majors with New York-AL (2015) and Seattle (2018-19) and is a combined 1-1 with a 5.97 ERA (23 ER, 34.2 IP) in 33 relief appearances. He was drafted by New York-AL in the 7th round of the 2013 amateur draft out of Louisiana State University. Rumbelow was acquired by the Mariners from the Yankees in exchange for minor leaguers JP Sears (lhp) and Juan Then (rhp) on Nov. 18, 2017.
