Mariners recall Dan Altavilla from AAA Tacoma

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

·       Dan Altavilla, RHP, recalled from AAA Tacoma.

·       Tayler Scott, RHP, optioned to AAA Tacoma (postgame June 20).

Altavilla (#53) will be in uniform and available for tonight’s (7:10 pm PT) game vs. the Baltimore Orioles.

The Mariners Major League, 40-man, roster remains full at 40 players.

Altavilla, 27, will be in his third stint with Seattle this season (also: March 19-22 & May 12). In his first 2 stints, he has appeared in 2 games, tossing a total of 0.2 innings and being charged with 3 earned runs. He was optioned to AAA Tacoma on March 23 when Seattle’s roster was cut to 25 players. In his first go-round with the Rainiers, he appeared in 5 games (0-0, 11.57), allowing 6 earned runs in 4.2 innings of work prior to being moved to AA Arkansas. With the Travelers, he was 3-0 with 4 saves and a 1.10 ERA (2 ER, 16.1 IP) in 14 games, allowed just 2 hits and 3 walks while striking out 25. Since his return to Tacoma June 9, Dan has appeared in 3 games and is 1-0, 5.40 (2 ER, 3.1 IP) with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts. Overall, this season at AAA he is 1-0, 9.00 (8 ER, 8.0 IP) in 8 games. 

In parts of 4 Major League seasons (2016-2019) with the Mariners, Altavilla is 4-3, 3.59 (32 ER, 80.1 IP) in 80 games, all in relief. In 2018, he was 3-2 with 5 holds and a 2.61 ERA (6 ER, 20.2 IP) with 23 strikeouts and 15 walks in 22 games. He had a pair of injured list stints, May 1-12 and June 8-Aug. 29. 

Scott, 27, was selected on June 7 and made his Major League debut June 8 at LAA, working 2.2 innings. With his debut, he became the first South African native to ever pitch in the Majors. In all, he appeared in 5 games with Seattle (2 GS) and was 0-0, 9.39 (8 ER, 7.2 IP) with 6 walks and 7 strikeouts. Scott was 3-2 with 1 save and a 5.88 ERA (22 ER, 33.2 IP) with 44 strikeouts and 19 walks in 19 relief appearances with AAA Tacoma this season. Since May 3, he is 2-1 with 1 save and a 1.83 ERA (4 ER, 19.2 IP) with 28 strikeouts and 7 walks in 11 games with the Rainiers.

Scott was signed by the Mariners as a minor league free agent on Nov. 27, 2018. The native of Johannesburg, South Africa, was originally selected by Chicago-NL in the 5th round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft. After being released by the Cubs on March 29, 2016, he spent time with Sioux City of the Independent American Association. He signed with the Brewers on July 4, 2016. On July 31, 2017, he was acquired by Texas from Milwaukee in exchange for Jeremy Jeffress (rhp). In parts of 9 minor league seasons with the Cubs (2011-15), Brewers (2016-17), Rangers (2017-18) and Mariners (2019-c), he is 40-36 with 9 saves and a 3.91 ERA (256 ER, 589.1 IP) with 432 strikeouts and 260 walks in 234 appearances (66 starts).
