Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:
·         Sam Gaviglio, RHP, recalled from AAA Tacoma.
·         Boog Powell, OF, optioned to AAA Tacoma (post-game, July 17).
Gaviglio (#44) will be in uniform and is the probable starting pitcher for tonight's (5:10 PT) game at the Houston Astros.
Gaviglio (pronounced "Guh-VEE-leo"), 27, is 3-4, 4.31 in 11 games, 10 starts, with Seattle this season. He was optioned to AAA Tacoma on July 7 to keep him in turn over the All-Star break, and he made one start with the Rainiers, allowing 4 earned runs in 5.0 innings in Tacoma's loss vs. Fresno on July 13.
The Mariners are 6-4 in Gaviglio's 10 starts, and he pitched at least 5.0 innings in 9 of the 10 starts. His 4.31 ERA is fifth-best among all MLB rookie pitchers (min: 50.0 IP). He made his MLB debut on May 11, at Toronto in relief, and moved into the Mariners starting rotation on May 18 and has allowed 3 ER or less in 7 of his 10 starts. He collected his first MLB win (and hit) May 29 at Colorado.
Prior to his original recall, he was 2-3 with a 3.31 ERA (12 ER, 32.2 IP) with 16 strikeouts and 3 walks in 5 starts with AAA Tacoma this season. Gaviglio made 1 start with Team Italy in the 2017 World Baseball Classic, taking a no-decision after allowing 2 runs on 5 hits while striking out 1 and walking 2 on March 11 vs. Team Venezuela.
Gaviglio was acquired by the Mariners from St. Louis in exchange for INF Ty Kelly on Nov. 20, 2014. The native of Ashland, Ore., has appeared in parts of 7 minor league seasons in the Cardinals (2011-14) and Mariners (2015-17) organizations, compiling a 36-39 record with a 4.01 ERA (278 ER, 624.1 IP) with 501 strikeouts and 164 walks.
Powell, 24, was in his third stint with the Mariners this season. He appeared in 3 games after his recall on July 2, and was 2-for-8. Overall this season, he's hit .194 (7x36) with 6 runs, 2 RBI and 6 walks in 23 games with Seattle in 2017. In 41 games with AAA Tacoma this year, he has hit .331 (45x136) with 33 runs, 8 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs, 20 RBI, 24 walks, 9 stolen bases and a .426 on-base percentage. Powell was recalled by Seattle on April 29, made his Major League debut the same day at Cleveland and appeared in 3 games with Seattle before being optioned to Tacoma on May 4. His second stint in the Majors ran from May 16-June 10.
