Mariners Spring Training opener rained out Thursday

M's score 5 runs in first 2 innings before Cactus League game vs. A's is rained out

February 21st, 2019

Mariners hitters managed to squeeze in 6 hits and 5 runs against the Oakland Athletics in a game that was rained out in the bottom of the second inning Thursday at Hohokam Stadium. Although the Cactus League lid lifter lasted under an hour, starting pitcher Marco Gonzales made the most of his appearance, pitching a scoreless first inning, bolstered by run support from second baseman Shed Long, left fielder Domingo Santana, catcher Omar Narváez and third baseman Dylan Moore.

The game started strong with two consecutive hits to right field by Long and shortstop Tim Beckham, followed by a sacrifice fly by Santana to drive Long in. Narváez drove home Beckham with a single to center. Gonzales followed that up with a 1-2-3 inning to wrap up the first. At the top of the second, Moore drove in DH Daniel Vogelbach and right fielder Tito Polo off a double down the third-base line, giving Seattle a 4-0 lead over Oakland.

After center fielder Braden Bishop moved Moore to third base on a groundout to second, Long drove him home by way of a ground-rule double. With a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second, Gonzales was about to return to the hill when the game was cancelled due to rain. Because the game didn’t last 5 innings, it will not be counted as an official game.

The Mariners return to Cactus League play tomorrow (Friday, February 22) hosting the Oakland Athletics at 12:10 PT/1:10 MT at Peoria Stadium. The game will be broadcast in the Seattle area on 710 ESPN Seattle and the Mariners Radio Network. It will also be televised live in HD on ROOT Sports NW. Right-handed pitcher Mike Leake is scheduled to start for the Mariners against Athletics right-hander Chris Volstad.
