A’s Matt Chapman to compete in 2019 T-Mobile Home Run Derby

OAKLAND, Calif. – Matt Chapman of the Oakland Athletics will compete in the 2019 T-Mobile Home Run Derby on Monday, July 8. The 2019 T-Mobile Home Run Derby will be held at Progressive Field in Cleveland, OH, and broadcast live by ESPN and MLB.com beginning at 8:00 p.m. (ET)/5:00 p.m. (PT). Chapman will be replacing Milwaukee’s Christian Yelich.

Chapman is the first A’s player to compete in the Derby since Yoenis Céspedes and Josh Donaldson in 2014. Athletics that have competed in the Home Run Derby are Jose Canseco (1986, 1990), Mark McGwire (1987, 1990, 1992, 1996, 1997), Ruben Sierra (1994), John Jaha (1999), Jason Giambi (2001), Céspedes (2013, 2014) and Donaldson (2014). A’s winners of the Derby are Céspedes (2013, 2014) and Mark McGwire (1992).

The annual showcase will also feature Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr., New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Josh Bell, Houston Astros infielder Alex Bregman, Toronto Blue Jays infielder Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Joc Pederson and Cleveland Indians first baseman Carlos Santana.­

Chapman was elected to the American League All-Star Team on the player ballot for the 90th Major League Baseball All-Star Game to be played on Tuesday, July 9 at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio. It is his first career All-Star selection.

Chapman is the first A’s third baseman to represent the club at the All-Star Game since Josh Donaldson in 2014.

Chapman, 26, entered the day hitting .265 (90-for-339) with 59 runs scored, 22 doubles, 3 triples, 21 home runs, 52 RBI, a .353 on-base percentage, a .534 slugging percentage and an .887 OPS in 89 games this season. He is among the American League leaders in extra-base hits (1st), go-ahead home runs (T1st, 10), total bases (5th), home runs (T6th), go-ahead RBI (T11th, 13), runs (T9th) and doubles (T9th). He leads Major League third basemen with 21 home runs and defensively, leads Major League third basemen in total chances (284) and putouts (103) and ranks second in assists (174), while leading AL third basemen in fielding percentage (.975).

Chapman’s 3.6 WAR is the 4th-best among American League position players behind Mike Trout (6.0), Alex Bregman (3.8) and Xander Bogaerts (3.7). He leads American League third basemen in home runs and ranks 2nd in doubles, RBI, runs and slugging percentage.

In three Major League seasons, he is hitting .264 (310-for-1176) with 198 runs, 87 doubles, 11 triples, 59 home runs and 160 RBI, with a .344 on-base percentage, .507 slugging percentage and an .851 OPS. Last season he won the American League Rawlings Gold Glove for third basemen, the Platinum Glove for all American League fielders and was named Defensive Player of the Year by Wilson.
